Braga is a beautiful city with a lot of incredible history. The day of our tour was filled with rain, and there was only one other couple so our guide Ricardo proposed that we cut short the trip to Braga and add in some time at Guimaraes which we all quickly agreed to.
To start, we took a walk through town looking at a lot of the historical buildings, churches, and other sites. Like much of Portugal there is a mix of medieval and new, and the rain didn’t dampen the impact of what we saw. We also went up to the Bom Jesus sanctuary, which is beautiful from the bottom of the staircase as is the view from the top looking out over the town.
After this we stopped in at a small local restaurant for lunch and then moved on to Guimaraes. It is considered the birthplace of Portugal, with the expected number of churches and castles related to the first king of the country. There are several beautiful gardens in the city, plus more views from the top of the hill.
Even without the off-schedule trip to Guimaraes, this tour would have been worth it. Ricardo is very personable and knowledgeable, and made for a very entertaining day.
