Overview

This experience offers a unique perspective through Portugal’s history, from colonialism and dictatorship to the revolution and post-revolution movements. It highlights the often-overlooked impact of colonialism on Black and Indigenous communities whose histories are deeply intertwined with Portugal’s. Along the way, we’ll discover the stories of impactful LGBTQ+ figures who fought for laws to protect and build rights for the community, shaping the contemporary queer movements in Portugal. Our journey ends at a queer-owned venue, where we’ll come together to enjoy delicious Afro-Brazilian tapas, celebrating both culture and community. We also provide a beautifully curated Queer Map of Lisbon, featuring detailed information about venues, artists, and services, all handpicked by locals.

Itinerary

  • Principe Real

    At our first stop, we will gather at the monument honoring the victims of homophobia for a brief introduction and overview of the tour. Here, we will explore the beginnings of the LGBTQ+ movement in Portugal, highlighting the first Pride March and public demonstrations. This symbolic site provides an opportunity to reflect on the history of LGBTQ+ rights in Lisbon, setting the stage for the rest of our journey.

  • Bairro Alto, Bica & Cais do Sodre

    As we walk through the streets of Bairro Alto, we’ll pause at a viewpoint to take in the stunning hills and landscape. Along the way, we’ll discuss how the LGBTQ+ neighborhood transforms from day to night, offering different experiences based on one’s level of access/privilege. We’ll delve into the patriarchal and colonial mindsets still present in society's behavior. Together, we’ll reflect on the questions: is inclusion in Portugal truly for everyone? Is there a way to make it better?

    Here, you will observe the monument of Padre António Vieira, and we will explore the church’s role in regulating sexuality, as well as its influence on societal attitudes toward not only homosexuality but any expression that deviates from the norm of homogeneity.

    Here, you’ll visit the site where the Portuguese revolution began and delve into the country’s dictatorship, the longest-lasting in Europe. We’ll explore how this regime shaped societal mindsets, enforcing a strict family model: a man, a wife, and happy children—nothing different. We’ll also highlight the resistance of key LGBTQ+ figures during this time.

    At this spot, we will discuss the contemporary queer movements that are challenging the structures and raising important questions. We’ll also explore how immigrants are bringing new strength and perspectives to the LGBTQ+ movements in Portugal.

    The tour ends at a queer-owned venue, where we will pay homage to the Black queer resistance that Criolense Kitchen Club has brought to the Graça neighborhood. We’ll also learn about this area, which plays an important role in the LGBTQ+ community.

The perfect way to get to know Lisbon and be in community

This was the most wonderful experience we have had on a trip in a long time, so so glad we did this! The tour was fascinating, inspiring, humbling, and full of queer joy. Our hosts were very knowledgeable and created a really thoughtful, insightful, and cohesive tour integrating historical and current context, with personal stories and lived experience. They were warm and welcoming, and fun! And we felt an instant sense of community and home with them. We met some other lovely queers to hang out on our trip! Cannot recommend this tour enough!

The tour was amazing. Lits of interesting facts about queer history and history in general. I really recommend to do the tour as soon as you arrive in Lisbon. You'll see lots of sights but also get some recommendations for food, attractions, parties, etc. from the guide.
