Overview

Join us for the "Hidden Gems Geo Trek Loop," a unique 6-7 hour trekking experience led by Eleonora, an experienced Geologist-Geophysicist and Environmental Guide. This trek offers a blend of personal passion, local culture, dynamic experiences, and detailed geological insights. We will explore geosites and cliff villages located between Cinque Terre National Park and Portovenere and Island Regional Park, including Schiara di Tramonti, Monesteroli, and Fossola. You'll have the opportunity to swim in clear crystal waters far from the crowds and visit a vineyard near Riomaggiore with breathtaking views. Discover the hidden gems of the 5 Terre and La Spezia with an expert guide who knows these trails intimately.

Meeting points

Our trek begins at 9:00 AM at the Litoranea di Monesteroli Bus Station. Your guide will wear a green T-shirt. If you don't have transportation, there are two bus options: from Riomaggiore, bus at Lavaccio at 8:45 AM, or from Piazza Chiodo in La Spezia at 8:35 AM. Both will arrive by 9:00.

Our adventure will conclude at 4:35 PM in the beautiful vineyard Borgo dei Campi. For those returning to Riomaggiore, a bus departs from Borgo dei Campi at 4:43 PM. Travelers heading to La Spezia can catch a bus at 4:52 PM.

Itinerary

  • Monesteroli

    We'll meet at the Litoranea di Monesteroli Bus Station, where I'll introduce our "Hidden Gems of 5 Lands" route and the geosites we'll explore. We'll embark on a loop trail starting from Fossola, heading towards Monte della Madonna, with a detour to Schiara di Tramonti. In the sea part of Schiara, you'll have the opportunity to swim in beautiful crystal-clear waters and admire the picturesque seaside village. After ascending back up the Schiara staircase, we'll have lunch at a picnic area at the trail's summit (please bring your own lunch!). We will continue our journey towards Monesteroli and reach the beginning of the famous UNESCO Monesteroli staircase, offering scenic views of the entire Tramonti coast and the Cinque Terre.

    Our path continuing in Fossola will then lead through panoramic terraced vineyards and limestone cliffs towards Borgo dei Campi.

    Depending on the group's fitness level, there will be a second opportunity to see the Piscine Naturali near Borgo dei Campi. We'll conclude our trail inside an ancient vineyard called "Vigna l’Eroica," which offers sweeping views. Surrounded by nature, we'll enjoy refreshments and discuss the day's insights, including the history of Cinque Terre, geosites, viticulture, and the relationship between geology and wine.

Delightful, exhilarating tour!

What an amazing day! The hike was informative, scenic, heart pumping, and immersive. The wine in their up and coming winery afterwards was sublime- after, we continued on the evening with an incredible dinner at another local “hidden gem”. Overall, it was a day to remember!

If you want a day hiking with a local who knows the trails, the history, the flora, fauna and the geology of the area then this is the tour you absolutely must take. The five towns of Cinque Terre have become extremely popular but on this off the beaten tour through the National Park, we saw maybe 15-20 people all day. Plus we hiked through so much stunning scenery. Elenonra, a trained Geologist and Guide has the perfect blend of passion for both hiking and the special geology in the area. We ended the day at Elenonra and Majic's (who joined us) casita and vineyard where we shared a bottle of wine and had some wonderful conversations, while overlooking the beautiful Gulf of Genoa. This was a perfect day and truly one of the best things I did on a 45 day vacation through Europe.

Eli & Magic are truly a MAGIC! They both offered us a deep insite to the history, culture and environment of the unique small very hilly terrain of Cinque Terra. The endless stairs scroll around historical vineyards, small groups of ancient houses and all at beauty of cliffs reaching down into the Mediterranean sea, Medium level walking ability suggested. Thank you both for an unforgettable full day

We did the hidden gems trek on our honeymoon and it was hands down the best thing we did in Italy! Our guide was fantastic and so knowledgeable and passionate about the local area. She was also able to tailor make the hike for our physical needs. It was great not needing to navigate what seemed to me to be a complex trail system. The paths we did take were not busy or crowded at all either. I can't recommend this activity enough. Grazie!
