â–ĽThe Most Authentic Samurai Training Activity in Kyoto, Japanâ–Ľ You will wear the proper training gear and hold real katana swords to train as the samurai did at a local dojo where 30+ students train regularly. Handling a katana correctly and cutting through objects will change your life. After participating in the training, if you wish to learn more, you can join our regular training or enroll in our online lessons. *Starting from November 2024, there may be occasions when interpreters/instructors other than Shogo will be responsible for the activities. However, rest assured that they are all professionals trained by Shogo. â–ĽThe content of this experienceâ–Ľ 1. Getting dressed in the training gear 2. Learning how to draw, sheath, and swing the katana safely 3. Learning about the culture and history of katana and samurai 4. Cutting rolled tatami mats with a real katana 5. Excellent experience - fun, informative and memorable. Great to be in a real dojo and I was able to watch my husband and son as they had the hands on experience. Great instructors!

Must-do while in Kyoto - swing a real katana, watch a real sensei perform katas, and learn all about samurais

*Note: The description for this activity says "mat cutting with a real katana is not currently available", but I don't believe that is true - we used a real katana to cut tatami mats!* The 5-star reviews of this amazing dojo led us to this activity, and they were spot-on! We spent 2 hours learning and practicing a kata (set of moves) with Yushin sensei and his two students. Yushin sensei had a native English-speaking student there, Jordan, who did a great job translating. Osayo, sensei's other student, dressed us all and later impressed us with her katana skills. Yushin sensei himself led the entire training, which was such a unique experience! We were eventually all tested on our kata skills, and even given the chance to don real samurai armor. Each student was able to use a real katana to slice mats after all the practice and testing. The sensei was funny, energetic, relatable, and patient. Yushin sensei also showed us some more complex katas himself, which was very cool to watch and see. It made us realize we all had a lot more work to do! Don't miss this activity - it was a big highlight of our short trip to Japan and of our time in Kyoto!!!! We would love to return again and again!

It was great to practice in a dojo. I was surprised how much I could do, despite my physical limitations. Do this over other Samurai experiences in Japan.

A small group authentic experience. My husband and daughter thoroughly enjoyed the instruction from Yushin and Jordan. It was informative and also FUN! I looked at other choices and chose this one because it seemed authentic and they were not disappointed. Yushin and Jordan were friendly, patient with a little humor tossed in!

Very cool interactive experience. Learning some basic fundamentals of this samurai sword style and some general samurai history was very captivating. The instructors were super nice and knowledgeable.
