Great food tour

Published on Dec, 2024

Brian (I hope I have remembered the name correctly) took us to the huge Abastos market which is very much for locals rather than the more central markets that do cater to tourists. It is a huge labyrinth and he took us round various stalls collecting and explaining various ingredients which we then made into tacos. We also tried quesadillas, pulque, tamales, chocolate and grasshoppers! He was full of knowledge but also funny and lighthearted. I was also lucky that it was a very nice group of seven so it was a very enjoyable experience. The market is an extraordinary place and the food was delicious and no dodgy tummy afterwards!

This tour was amazing. It was really educational and immersive. I felt like I got to truly experience and understand the market in a way I couldn’t have by going on my own. It was really just a plus that the food was also delicious! Brian was an amazing tour guide and we were lucky to have just us on the tour, so he answered tons of questions and taught us about the various options at the booths and helped us with purchasing a few things to share with friends and family when we get home. Our Spanish is super limited and Brian was great at giving us English comparisons for some of the traditional ingredients along with doing the whole tour in English (and putting up with me trying to come up with the Spanish words for things haha). I could not recommend this tour more, it was better than I expected!

Fantastic way to taste your way through the Mercado de Abastos

Had a great time on this tour. Our guide was friendly, knowledgeable, and allowed us to experience the market like a local would. There was so much food included! Got to taste lots of different traditional foods.

Wonderful tour

Great tour with Brian from Etnofood. We visited the Central de Abastos in Oaxaca. Walking around the market was an invigorating experience. The people we saw and met made this very memorable. The food was incredible as well. All of the food and drink tasted great and included tacos, quesadillas (but real ones, not Americanized ones), and tecate and pulque. I appreciated that this is a tour that genuinely takes you to a non tourist place (many promise that, but rarely does it happen). Brian was very informative about the food and the market. I read some reviews that said they didn't feel safe. I felt as safe as I do anywhere when you around lots of people. While hard for me to understand people feeling unsafe, I highly advise people to embrace feeling uncomfortable so you can learn and experience from life.

Excellent and yummy tour!

Our guide was great! This was a great way to experience the market and sample traditional food! It’s also fun to meet other people visiting the city. Come hungry!
