Overview

In Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods of Mouraria and Graça, where scenic little streets spread out, web-like, in the shadows of St. George Castle, the smell of change (and, of course, garlic) is in the air. Though a long neglected corner of the city, these days many old buildings are rapidly being renewed here, new communities are sinking roots and new restaurants are opening, challenging the stodgy and rough identity that the area is famous for. After all, this is where fado – Lisbon’s trademark musical style – was born in seedy 19th century taverns. Here is one of the bastions of the annual St. Anthony celebrations, where sardines are grilled on street corners. Here also is an incredibly diverse population of old locals, new immigrants and Portuguese bohemians living as neighbors. Here can be found the flavors so integral to the city’s traditions – right alongside delicious evidence that this place is in a state of transition.

Great Small Group Food Tour With Knowledgeable Guide!

We had a wonderful time with our tour guide Irene. She was very knowledgeable and took us to some places we very likely would not have found or chosen on our own. We had a variety of food and drink to sample and great explanations of the backgrounds of the items. We had a small group that enjoyed each other's company. And, it was interesting to walk up and through a few neighborhoods of Lisbon that were next to the Alfama where we were staying (wear comfortable shoes for a good walk). Would highly recommend this tour and other tours organized by Culinary Backstreets in Portugal and the many other places they lead food tours across the world.

We had an amazing day with Andre. We tasted food we had not tried before and in places we never would have found. We heard great stories and history. We returned to 2 stops to eat more on another day. André was warm and fun , we felt like we were long time friends by the end of the day. An added bonus was he treated us to a small magic show !

This was a great experience. Our guide Martim was super informative and personable. The ground we covered both intellectually and physically was very satisfying. I highly recommend this as much more than a food tour.

A great unique experience. Our guide Martim was very informative, intelligent and catered to everyone's interests. We really enjoyed walking the backstreets of his neighborhood and sampling the truly authentic food. The small group size was definitely an advantage - and 7 hours duration really gave great value for the price charged. thank you
