Overview

The tour is named The Historical Compass (Brújula histórica) after the configuration of Oaxaca's city center, full of churches located on the cardinal points, these are decisive places for the urban layout strictly connected to the city religious, political and mystical life over the centuries. We will be visiting buildings, streets and neighbourhoods where celebrations, wars, encounters and fascinating mysterious events have taken place. Walking through places embedded with legends and anecdotes belonging to tradition and popular culture of the city history. Digging into the city’s secrets we will focus also on relevant Oaxacan’s female characters and their actions as well as less known and less told stories from prehispanic and colonial periods. By the end of the tour you will have mapped the city in a historical way, eaten an ice cream and learned some new ways to taste mezcal.

    It is a small plaza, full of color and sometimes with musicians playing mexican songs and melodies. This place is full of traditional ice cream.

  • Basilica de Nuestra Senora de la Soledad

    Basilica where there is a relic that is part of the legends of Oaxaca. We will see the architecture and art of the façade of the church.

    25 minutes

  • Zocalo

    We will stop at the zocalo to learn how the city was founded, how the previous moments were and what clues were left by the characters who did it in the layout of the city and its buildings.

Do this tour - it would enrich your experience of Oaxaca.

Veronica was engaging, easy to be with and conducted a unique and interesting tour. Our stay in Oaxaca is enriched by the information she shared. The ice cream stop was a nice touch and we got a chance to chat and learn about Mezcal, restaurants, foods etc. Your stay in Oaxaca would definitely be enhanced if you do this tour.

We were able to see many churches in the area, get an overall sense of the city design, and a hear a little urban mythology. I was introduced to a fantastic place I otherwise would not have known about near the western edge of centro.
