The Basilica of Saint Francis is the most-renowned church of Assisi, a breathtaking masterpiece of medieval art and architecture. Discover the secrets of Saint Francis, who lived the high-spirited life typical of a wealthy young man until he had a mystical vision of Jesus Christ, and decided to dedicate his whole existence to the poor and sick people. Admire the marvellous frescoes painted by Giotto, father of modern realistic art, "the most sovereign master of painting in his time”. Visit the Upper Church, slender and bright thanks to its Gothic style and the colorful glass windows, and the Lower Church, where the mortal remains of Saint Francis are preserved among amazing frescoes by the greatest Italian artists of the Middle Ages, like Cimabue and Simone Martini.

I never went on a private tour as too expensive. I did go on a Cosmos tour which was paid for in the Cosmos tour! It is very impressive It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. St Francis of Assisi is buried in a crypt here. The basilica was begun in 1228.

After our two-hour private tour of the upper and lower basilicas of Saint Francis, I can't imagine this experience without the expert guidance of Serena Paolini. She shared so many facts and little things that we would not have noticed, but the amount of information was never overwhelming, just purely enjoyable. She also knows well how to comfortably move you through the spaces. Communicating with ear phones meant that we easily heard every word. I would definitely use this service again and highly recommend it to others.
