Overview

Visit the historic center of Assisi, in a full-day tour from Rome, and learn the story of its patron saint, St. Francesco of Assisi. Now the site of many a pilgrimage, Assisi is linked in legend with its native son, St. Francis. The gentle saint founded the Franciscan order and shares honours with St. Catherine of Siena as the patron saint of Italy. He is remembered by many, even non-Christians, as a lover of nature (his preaching to an audience of birds is one of the legends of his life). You will marvel at the sight of the Convent of Santa Chiara, where our guide will explain in details its history, and then continue through the countryside of Umbria in Orvieto. The city is populated since Etruscan times and was a major centre of their civilization. The Gothic cathedral is one of the major sights: the façade is particularly striking and includes some remarkable sculpture. After visiting the cities, relax on your ride back to Rome through the gorgeous Umbrian countryside.

    Orvieto Cathedral (Italian: Duomo di Orvieto; Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta) is a large 14th-century Roman Catholic cathedral dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and situated in the town of Orvieto in Umbria, central Italy. Formerly the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Todi, it has been since 1986 that of the Diocese of Orvieto-Todi.

    It is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Order of Friars Minor Conventual in Assisi, a town in the Umbria region in central Italy, where Saint Francis was born and died. With its accompanying friary, Sacro Convento, the basilica is a distinctive landmark to those approaching Assisi. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000.

Great tour especially if you’re looking for a something quant and intimate.

Was much more than we expected. So much history to experience. The churches were awesome and commentary was informative. The only negative was the van. Was not comfortable for 5 adults since there was a the tour guide and driver. It was not clean by my standards.

A super experience. Mariella guided the four of us through Assisi and Orvieto, and we saw and learned so much that we could not have discovered on our own. The four of us were able to quickly access key sites much more effectively than any of the large tours which I saw. Worth the $$ - highly recommend.
