Overview

Wondering Reindeer is Sami reindeer experience company ho is offering guests authentic Sami adventures. We offer guests a small group tour (16pers) around Kvaløya island with majestic mountains and arctic fjords. During the trip around the island, guests will join Sami reindeer herder and his reindeers which are living in wildness close to Sommarøy, guests will enjoy reindeer herder calls for his reindeers who are living in free natural habitat. When the herd is gathered, there will be an opportunity to feed the animals by hand. Guests will also be gathering in traditional Sami lavvo (Sami tent) around open bonfire to enjoy Joik (traditional Sami songs) and learn more about Sami traditions. During the roundtrip we will visit Sommarøy Arctic Hotel for lunch/meal made of local ingredients. Sommrøy is a fantastic place and a group of islands in the open sea 1,5 hours driving from Tromsø. Guests will have time to explore Sommrøy by walking around before we leave the fishing community.

Itinerary

  • Kvaloya

    Starts with buss tour on Kvaløya which is an island surrounded by majestic mountains and Arctic fjords. You will enjoy the view of the landscape along the coastal road while we drive. We stop at some suitable places to admire the landscapes we pass.

    Spend 2 hours with Sami reindeer herder and his reindeers which are living in wildness close to Sommarøy, guests will enjoy reindeer herder and his reindeers which are living in wildness close to Sommarøy, guests will enjoy reindeer herder calls for his reindeers who are living in free natural habitat.     We will visit Sommarøy, which are a group of islands in the open sea with blue water and white sandy beaches. There will be some time to explore the local community by walking in the area by yourself. Lunch will be served at Sommarøy Arctic Hotel at approx. 12:30PM (12.30). Guests can choose one dish each from the restaurant menu. Some options are fish soup with bread made from local ingredients, burgers, salad, and many other options. There are also options like vegetarian and gluten-free. Remember to point out special wishes when you book the tour. Sometime the restaurant serves large lunch buffet, and if so, that will be served instead of food from menu.

  • Tromso Fjords (Pass By)

    After enjoying the Sommarøy with food, coffee, and tea, it is time to head back to Tromsø and reflect on a memorable experience. We arrive at Scandic Ishavshotel Tromsø about 4:00 pm (16:00)

Beautiful drive, charming animals and a lovely glance into Sami culture. Bonus that the arctic suits are provided. And the lunch was tasty!

Magical snowy reindeer encounter

Booked this activity specifically because it included several stops on the way to the reindeer to take in the beautiful Norwegian landscapes. When clear, the fjords and snowy mountains make for breathtaking scenery. It was a nice bonus to what was already a great excursion. The reindeer were so friendly - feeding them as the snow fell was such a magical experience. Getting to learn about the Sami people, history, and tradition was also enlightening and important. AYCE lunch buffet was terrific. Highly recommend!

A great day out to learn about the Sami culture and the Arctic Fjord's. Feeding the reindeer was a big highlight of the holiday. Thoroughly recommend this tour.

Amazing local tour

Such a wonderful local tour. Ole was a fantastic tour guide and educated us about the Sami culture and shared folklore about the ancient Norwegian life. We did a fabulous tour of the Fjords, reindeer feeding with Sarah and having hot drinks in a local tent. He also took us to a lovely place for lunch and made some great friends whilst on it. The weather was perfect and Ole’s driving skills were by far safe and secure. Would definitely recommend it .

Wonderful experience. Our guide was a very kind authentic Sami and took us through all the different aspects of his culture while stopping multiple times on the road to enjoy the fiords. Feeding the reindeers was very special and also helped me understand their importance in the Nordic countries. The entire tour is well organized, the group is small, and transportation and lunch were good. You end your day with a lot of appreciation for the Sami people.
