Overview

This activity is unique, since topics are addressed from a local perspective, for example the time of construction of this city of Mérida, its origins as a Mayan city, which we will see reflected, through Mayan aesthetic stones in some buildings. Likewise, we will talk about the culture and traditions of this city, as well as a wide variety of places to have fun and eat delicious food; from restaurants to famous taquerias in the historic center of this city. On Sunday mornings, we will visit the most popular market in the city, the famous Lucas de Gálvez to see the colorful fresh fruits of the region.

The Santa Lucía park is located on 60 x 55 downtown street. In this park are the famous lovers' chairs (giants). You will identify me because I am holding a pink umbrella and a pink cap.

We finished in the first block of the city of Mérida at the Casa de Montejo Museum. Maximum expression of the Plataresque style of architecture.

    In this park, serenades are celebrated with the musical genre of Yucatecan trova, restaurants and chocolates are offered. The third oldest park in Mérida.

    The central buildings of the Autonomous University of Yucatán offer detailed information on its colonial, Arabic and neo-Mayan architecture. Also details of its foundation as the highest house of studies in Yucatán.

    A jewel of European architecture. Its important opera-style hall makes it one of the best theaters in Mexico.

    Here we will observe this building and its official coats of arms. Likewise, we will address issues of the origin of why the Spanish decided to name this city Mérida. A place where every Monday is the scene of the traditional dance called Jarana.

    This building contains the purest expression of Spanish Plataresco architecture. It is the only building on the American continent with this style.

Merida Walking Tour with Fernando

Fernando did a great job despite the heat, humidity, and 20 guests! He was friendly, knowledgeable, and fun to walk with. I will say though, I will look for a smaller walking tour in my next destination. Any city can be a noisy place so, walking and talking with 20 people in tow makes it difficult - if not frustrating - trying to hear everything he had to share. Plus, there is a ton of street construction going on in Merida right now. Ten guests is really the maximum that can feasibly walk around together between the construction. Still, 5 stars for Fernando!
