As a landmark and heritage site at the heart of Nairobi’s CBD, Jamia Mosque-Nairobi displays an iconic image and an architectural masterpiece. Founded by Syed Maulana Abdullah Shah in the year 1902 and constructed between 1925 and 1933, Jamia Mosque became the center of Muslim religious organization throughout the pre-independent and independent years.

The craft market, occupying both the central part of the building and the semi-open area behind it, presents a visually enticing display that is difficult to resist. Set against the backdrop of the market's picturesque ceiling, visitors are greeted with a variety of crafts and artifacts. From antique African artifacts and beadwork to basketry, jewelry, Kisii soapstone, and wooden carvings, the market showcases the immense talent and creativity of local artisans. Life-sized animal carvings are also on display, adding a touch of wonder to the vibrant atmosphere. The craft market is particularly popular among foreign visitors, and to facilitate their transactions, money changers have established their businesses within the market premises. Originally built in 1930 near the railway line, which now runs along Loita Street, the Nairobi City Market initially served as the primary retail outlet for fruits and vegetables in the city.

The building was designed by C. Rand Ovary, the construction of which was completed in 1913 for the Ministry of Native Affairs, during colonial times, served as a government office that would have the function of counting marriages, births and deaths. From 1963, the building was used as the Provisional Commissioner's office until 1984. The building was later used as Kanu's branch office of Nairobi until 1997. In 1995, the building was declared a national monument. In 1997, ownership of the building was passed to the National Museums of Kenya. In 1999, the state corporation began the process of renovating the building. In 2005, the renovation work was completed and the gallery opened for the first time.[1] During 2019, the National Museums of Kenya collaborated with Google to digitize the Nairobi gallery's exhibits to the Google Arts & Culture platform as well as add an adapted version of Google Street View to the museum's rooms.

Private Historical Walking Tour in Innercity Nairobi with Steve

Published on Sep, 2023

We spent a few hours in the city. Steve, who was a tour guide, introduced the city. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Thank you, Steve, and thank you, Nairobi! Be sure to visit the handicrafts market, too; there are nice and friendly vendors a few steps away from the Supreme Court.
