Overview

In the 2nd World War Lisbon swarmed with spies from the main sides in conflict. A Walking tour designed to find out how neutral Portugal provided the natural setting for conspiracy. Inside the city of Lisbon both the Allies and the Axis kept impressive diplomatic services: probably the only place in war-torn Europe where all sides were able to meet on equal grounds. Lisbon suddenly became a true “nest of spies” as mentioned in several period chronicles and the “plane to Lisbon”, as an escape route in the movie Casablanca, remains one of the best known examples. Wartime espionage in Lisbon

We enjoyed learning about Portugal’s role in international espionage while strolling Lisbon’s streets. Ze was an engaging guide who connected history with popular culture.

A really great tour. We ended up being the only participants so our tour guide Ze (Jozeph) created our very own schedule. He was exceptionally knowledgeable and clearly explained the history of Lisbon. It was a real pleasure to walk the streets and relive history with him. Thank you - will definitely look to take another walking tour with Lisbon walker.

Extremely knowledgeable guide. José was attentive to our needs and interests. Our time with him passed very quickly. We highly recommend this tour. It’s an all encompassing history lesson of the 20th century.

If you are a student of WWII you want to take this tour. Our guide was Jose, extremely knowledgeable and entertaining at the same time. Narrative included not just history but current political insight - all very interesting. We would have liked a few more spy stories but otherwise the tour was great.
