Overview

-This experience offers a fantastic overview of the Basque coast, countryside and culture! Furthermore, this tour mixes an invigorating trek with the renowned Basque cuisine and wine! -Please wear comfortable walking shoes and loose clothing as we will be hiking to the top of Gaztelugatxe with some of the most amazing views in the Basque Country! We also advise bringing a rain jacket, hat and sunblock as the weather can change a lot in this region. -Following the hike, you will experience some delicious tapas/pintxos at a local restaurant in the quaint fishing village of Bermeo that exemplifies our love of food and drink! -If you are visiting the Basque Country, it is an absolute must to come see our rugged and dramatically beautiful coastline. -This tour is great mix of exercise, nature, food and wine that will surely be one of the highlights of your vacation!

Itinerary

  • San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

    -We will make the hike to the top of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe! Expect to spend approximately 2 hours hiking to the top and back. Please wear comfortable walking shoes. -Located just off the shore along the Bay of Biscay and 35 km (22 miles) east from Bilbao, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is a definite “must” if you are visiting the Basque Country. Many will recognize San Juan de Gaztelugatxe as the island fortress of “Dragonstone” from season 7 of Game of Thrones, however, its real name can be translated as “castle rock” from Basque (“gaztelu” = castle + “aitz” = rock). -The island is connected to the mainland by a man-made stone bridge. The bridge transitions into a narrow path that contains 241 steps and zigzags its way back and forth to the top. These steps have even been recognized as one of the world’s grandest staircases.

  • Bermeo

    Bermeo is a colorful coastal village located in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve and is less than 10 km away from the impressive San Juan de Gaztelugatxe island. Famous for its fishing tradition, it is a great place to stop for a while and explore. We will enjoy some pintxos/tapas at the marina, and for a leisurely stroll through the scenic old fishing port.

5 Star Experience!

Would highly recommend booking with The Best of Basque as our experience from first inquiry to drop off at our ship was 5 star. We booked this private tour as a shore excursion for our day in Bilbao and it was fabulous! Zach was extremely helpful and responsive throughout the booking process, making recommendations based on our group members and timelines. He was also an excellent guide, providing local insights, history and interesting facts that engaged all group members. Everyone had a good time (and plenty of food!) and we arrived back at the ship with plenty of time to spare. We were delighted with our tour experience and are sure that you will be as well!

Irene was truly amazing and went out of her way to give us the best experience in her tour and outside. She found the best time to visit the fort and we enjoyed her telling of the history of the place and the Basque people. We enjoyed the visit and tapas at Bermeo afterwards. Irene was so kind and so lovely she even gave us recommendations to restaurants for our visit to San Sebastián the day after. 10/10 would recommend Irene. Thank you!

Seamless Hiking Adventure

If you love nature and are into hikes, we highly recommend Irene of The Best of Basque. She will take you on a flawless hiking experience to one of the most beautiful spots in the Basque country. We don’t watch Game of Thrones but this was reportedly featured in the show. You don’t have to worry about a thing because Irene will pick you up and drop you off at your hotel, drive you comfortably to the site, take care of the permit needed to enter the site, guide and accompany you through all the 240 steps to reach the top and feed you with a delicious lunch in charming Bermeo after your exhilarating hike. She is a native Basque and knows the ins and outs of the area so you will get there well before anyone else and enjoy the place without the crowds. Thank you Irene for an unforgettable experience and happy travels! Hope to touch base with you again soon.
