Discover what makes La Rioja Spain's premier winemaking region on this vineyard and winery tour from Bilbao. Visit 3 top wineries to taste the bold, fruity red blends that put Rioja on the wine lover’s map, and admire the architectural styles of other estates, including one designed by Frank Gehry. Stroll inside the city walls of the medieval Basque town of Laguardia on a guided walking tour, and enjoy the stunning scenery found in the region. A visit to 3 historic and emblematic wineries is included to highlight the absolute pinnacle and prestige of the La Rioja winemaking. These estates produce wine that rates in the top 100 of Rioja wines with more than 90 Parker Points. There will be tastings of both red and white wines so you will have a thorough overview of the La Rioja wine region.

Itinerary

Haro

We will visit a spectacular subterranean winery beneath a centuries old village in the beautiful Ebro Valley of the La Rioja wine country. This winery will include a 1 hour tour and 3 subsequent tastings of their premium wines only available to clients who visit this special winery.

Samaniego

Our next visits will be tasting experiences at boutique family-run wineries. We will have tastings of the most premium wines from their oldest vines. You will also get to sample their limited-quantity olive oil with fresh bread, cheese and chorizo.

Laguardia

We will then head to the 10th century village of Laguardia for lunch at a local restaurant or pintxo/tapas bar depending on your preference and appetite. After lunch, we will take a leisurely stroll through the beautiful town pointing out sites of interest. There is also amazing photo opportunities of the entirety of the beautiful Ebro Valley.

We will take you to see the Frank Gehry designed Hotel Marques de Riscal for photos and a walk through the vineyards.

Amazing private luxury Rioja winery tour!

My husband and I just returned from an amazing trip to the Basque Country. The destination is unique in the world, and the food and wine alone make the trip worth taking. We had a special interest in visiting the Rioja wine region after hearing about the world class wines that have been produced there for almost a thousand years! Gratefully our research connected us with Zach and Irene, the owners of The Best of Basque luxury tour company. Their in-depth local knowledge and connections with the best and most unique wineries made for a really exceptional experience. With over 600 wineries in the region, you couldn't possibly do this on your own. We were picked up at the hotel in one of their spotless luxury vans and spent the next several hours being immersed in the beauty and history of Basque Country. After visiting three extraordinary wineries with personal tours and tastings, we were ready for lunch. Zach brought us to an excellent local restaurant where we experienced Basque cuisine, some of the best food in the world. We invited Zach to join us and thankfully he obliged. His passion for the food and ability to speak Spanish resulted in an unbelievable meal. I strongly recommend touring with The Best of Basque. They will surpass your expectations!

A great day in La Rioja

This was a memorable experience for my wife and me, experiencing a wine region new to us. Our guide Zach really knew his Spanish, Basque and wine history and was fun to talk to. The three bodegas we visited were all very welcoming with friendly, informative hosts and incredible wines. We would love to do it again soon.

Brilliant tour of Rioja wineries

We had a wonderful time on our private tour of three premium Rioja wineries, led by Zach. Communication and information throughout the whole booking process and the day itself was great. The transfer from and back to where we were staying in Bilbao was very comfortable, with beautiful scenery. We had multiple delicious wines with local snacks at each of the wineries, with a full winery tour at one which was fantastic. Zach kindly also booked us somewhere for lunch in LaGuardia (at our request) where we had some delicious local food and more wine! Would highly recommend this tour for anyone wanting to visit some wineries in the area!

Fantastic tour of Rioja wine region

The wine tour of Rioja was amazing. We did it as a group of 6 (thank you to Craig/Joanne from Canada and Bjorn/Jane from Norway for their great company on the trip). Irene was a fantastic guide - full of fun and enthusiasm. She gave us so much useful information about Bilbao and the Basque region. We visited 3 wineries and enjoyed tasting so many different wines - each of the hosts was interesting and engaging. Along the way we stopped for many great photo opportunities and to visit other places of interest. We would recommend this tour for anyone visiting this area. It is a really great day out!
