Himeji Castle, nicknamed the White Heron Castle by its color, is a Japanese fortified castle. It dates from medieval times and is one of only 12 Japanese castles to have been perfectly preserved. UNESCO has designated this castle as a World Heritage Site. It is beautiful! And now it is open to our visits.

Clear filterHimeji Castle and Kobe tour

Mouloud was my tour guide to this epic day of sightseeing. The Himeji Castle, a World Heritage Site - white heron castle - was truly a sight to behold. Even the approach from the train station was along a grand promenade. Dating back to 1333 ,Himeji has served both defensive and administrative purposes in the centuries of rival warlords, feudalism and then the Meiji era. Moving from Kyoto to Kobe, we toured the Chinatown and the harbor area of Kobe, and Mouloud provided valuable context as to their origins. To anyone wishing to gain an appreciation of the history and culture of these landmarks, I highly recommend this tour.
