Itinerary

  • Castelo de Almourol

    We start our Templar Tour with a visit to the Castle of Almourol located on a small island already inhabited at the time of Roman occupation of the peninsula, later by the Templars, a small Castle built in the middle of the Tagus River, all for protection reasons of course.

  • Igreja de Santa Maria dos Olivais

    Perhaps the first seat of the Order of the Temple, a transition from the Romanesque style to the Gothic, on the facade a large rosette with the mark of the Knights templar, the Signum Salomonis. In this church the funerary monuments of Guladim Pais, founder of the city, and other Grand Masters of the Order, a Church that seems smaller than in reality is once it is buried two meters below the ground.

    Known internationally as the city of the Templars, in Tomar we will find testimonies of its influence, namely the Mata dos Sete Montes where according to tradition initiated rituals, and templar marks throughout the city which demonstrates the importance and pride of this city for this fantastic military order.

  • Synagogue of Tomar

    Portugal was for centuries the European oasis of peaceful cohabitation between Christians, Muslims and Jews, the Tomar Synagogue, founded in the mid-19th century. XV, right in the center of the city, is the pretext for a review of this excellent relationship

  • Convento de Cristo

    Then we continue our Templar Tour towards Tomar beginning the visit to the Templar Castle / Convent of Christ was the seat of the Order of the Temple until 1314, and the Order of Christ, from 1357. From the castle (1160) is part of the octagonal tray (late 12th century), Romanesque sanctuary of oriental influence.

Fantastic tour

Well constructed tour telling the story of the templars. The tour guide, Joao, was really knowledgeable. As well as the sites, saw picturesque locations and had a very nice lunch as well. Would recommend. The monastery was stunning and probably the best thing in/around Lisbon.

We had the most amazing experience with John and Kitzel tours. He was one of the best tour guides we have ever experienced with a family ranging from 3 to 70 years old and visiting 12+ countries. John is attentive, patient with kids, and mindful of limitations. Do not hesitate to book your tour with them!! We wish we had booked more excursions. His historical knowledge and ability to communicate in multiple languages is phenomenal.

A great day in and around Tomar

We greatly enjoyed our Knights Templar tour with João. Even before the tour, he was very communicative and then arrived promptly to whisk us away from Lisbon for the day. In addition to showing us magnificent sites, he kept the discussion interesting, with everything from history to fiction and conspiracy theories. The pace was good, with enough time to enjoy each stop, plus a leisurely lunch at a tasty restaurant he suggested in Tomar. We wouldn't hesitate to book another tour with him the next time we're in Lisbon.

Anastasia was a fmgreat guide and conveyed much of the history of the places we visited. The churches and castles were very interesting. The convent od Christ was the highlight and we also had a great lunch in Tomar. Highly recommended.

Joao (John) was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He clearly loves his job and sharing his knowledge with his clients. He is very accommodating and focused on what we wanted and needed. The tour was well organized and he was very aware of opening times, lunch closures, traffic patterns, etc. He selected a great place for lunch that met our needs for diet restrictions. The various monuments, monastery, churches, and other significant Knights Templar sites were exceptional and Joao's research and ability to discuss the history, various theories, how they relate to each other and the larger political events was very enlightening. He was especially engaging when he learned my husband was a Freemason and could share a lot of relevant information. Joao also enlightened us about the tile history and various tile production. He also spoke about other sights in Lisbon and various other bits to help us enjoy the rest of our stay. Highly recommend this tour and Joao.
