After you meet up at Regal Cinema-an iconic Art Deco cinema theatre in Colaba, Gufram takes you to relish a glass of hot chai (tea) in a typical Mumbai place. That sets you up for the rest of the absorbing trip through south Mumbai! Next stop is Sassoon Docks - one of the oldest docks built in 1875. Followed by a visit to observe traditional laundry washing, meeting a resident family in one of the sprawling slums, the fisherfolk's village. A ride on the Marine Drive and then a history lesson at Gandhi House. And deeper into history with a visit to the ancient Banganga Holy Tank (built in the 12th century). The guide and chauffeur that met me, Gufram, was a well dressed, youngish, healthy man who spoke very good English. So I was stunned to learn he lived in a slum. Hence the visit to his slum was so much more meaningful and to my complete surprise, very enjoyable. It was the highlight of the day and a memorable occasion.
