So in Buddhism, Jizo is an important Bodhisattva. The story goes that all young children go to Sai-no-kawara after their death. In the underworld this is the dried-up bed of the river of souls. Because they have little experience (karma) they have to build little towers of stones. Each tower represents a prayer. But every night the oni, the devils, come and knock these towers down. The young souls have to start all over again. But then Jizo comes to their rescue. He wanders around and hides the children in his red bibs. They are now in good hands with Jizo. But why the red bibs? The colour red probably refers to earlier times. An old tradition in the Asuka period (522-645AD) was that children with diseases like chicken pox had to wear red bibs to distinguish them from other children. But red is also seen as the colour that offers protection and security.

It was a great trip, lots of things to see. Our driver Bhatti was very good and knowledgeable. He was very nice and took pictures of us, and he knew shortcuts to avoid traffic and get us there faster.

My friends and I had a wonderful day out at Nikko! Our guide was knowledgeable and happy to take us around all the different sites to see! We would highly recommend this tour as well as the area! If we come back to Japan we will definitely do this again!
A Must-Do Experience in Nikko with Malik!

Highly recommend this day trip! Nikko is stunning - there is a lot to do and it is a long drive so start as early as you can to get ahead of traffic. It was raining and foggy today so we didn’t get to fully appreciate the falls but was still pretty and the shrines were amazing! If possible to build in extra time at the end, I thought the Kinugawa Onsen area was beautiful too. Malik, my driver /guide, arrived promptly and was very gracious throughout. He had brought an umbrella for me and had a water bottle waiting for me in the car when we started. His car (van) is also very nice - spacious, , comfortable and very clean! If I had questions, he was very knowledgeable about the sites and area and could provide any info but also very respectful and not overly talkative (if that makes sense ;) - i did some work on my laptop on the drive from Tokyo and he just offered his phone wifi as a hotspot and let me be. He provided suggested times for stops to keep us on track and hit places before they close and before we hit really bad traffic but was also flexible and accommodating if I preferred something different. He is also apparently a hobby photographer and has a keen eye. As a solo traveler I especially appreciated that - he brought me to spots where I could get good pictures and took some really nice shots for me! He also shared some he took with a different group to Mt Fuji since it is as cloudy the day I went - they are stunning (posted here with his permission) - All in all, he was a great driver/guide and it was a wonderful day. highly recommend! I will return and will definitely book with Malik again!
Best way to see Nikko.

Nikko has been on my "Need to see" list for years and I was not disappointed. Going in November provided a chance to see the beauty of Nikko in the splendor of fall colors. The falls and lake are gorgeous. The Toshogu Shrine is just amazing to see in person. This was a short notice booking and we were on a tight schedule, so booking a private tour was a fantastic way to see the sites, with no hassle or disappointment. Our driver (Bhartik) was early to pick us up, was very friendly and got us safely to our destination and back, with a great recommendation for lunch in Nikko as well. Our transport was clean, quiet and well maintained and flexibility on the schedule just made everything flow well. Bucket list item checked.

If you take the tour, ask to spend less time at the lake and more time at the Imperial Villa and the Shinkyo Bridge. We booked our trip on a Japanese holiday. Our guide Sohail, picked us up and managed our time because of the extra traffic. He made sure we saw everything we wanted to see and was great to be around. I recommend him as a driver.
