    A visit to the Oceanário de Lisboa is a unique experience that will take you to know and feel the unforgettable magic of the underwater world. Embark on this contemplative journey to discover 8000 sea creatures, from 500 different species. The permanent exhibition (Aquarium) celebrates life on Earth with a central 5-million-liter saltwater aquarium surrounded by four marine habitats representing habitats of the North Atlantic, Antarctic*, Temperate Pacific, and Tropical Indian Ocean, creating the illusion that we are looking at one aquarium and one ocean. The visit takes place on two levels, terrestrial and underwater, crossing the temperate, tropical, and cold waters of the different oceans of the planet. Discover also the «Forests Underwater», a work by master Takashi Amano, who presents us with tropical forests through the largest nature aquarium in the world and the new «Submerged Universe» exhibition, an immersive journey into the immensity of the ocean.

Amazingly surprising

Okay so we’re from Australia so have seen our fair share of marine parks and centres but this one exceptional. Mostly in its comprehensively sustainable message and global coverage. I particularly loved the puffins and otters. It also was an incredibly calming and zen kind of place - we spent a good few hours exploring every exhibition. Slightly outside of downtown Lisbon it’s worth the visit and it’s very near the Vasco de Gama outlet centre if that’s your thing!

The layout of this aquarium with its huge central tank and 4 adjacent ‘zones’ is inspired! You get to see the main area from different angles and heights. Lots of cool species and amazing habitats.

Lives up to the hype as one of the best aquaria in the world - not just for the exhibits, but how it's all organized. The central tank with satellite exhibits in different climates was really fantastic.

Busy but worth it

Very well laid out large aquarium, which can deal with large groups quite well. We went when it opened but it got busy very quickly. The design of the building means that there are plenty of opportunities to view the main attraction which is the huge central aquarium, complete with sharks. Penguins were not there when we were there as they bit was being done up which was a shame, but we got up close and personal with the puffins instead.

Everyone we ran into recommended visiting here. So glad we did. So much too see for penguins to sea otters and every type of fish you can imagine plus sharks and rays.
