Overview

My name is Diogo, i am an archaeologist and i live in Sintra since i can remember. As a local I've gathered knowledge and love for my land that i now want to share. I've been involved with archaeological excavations in Sintra where we uncovered treasures from past cultures. I am also a local tour guide with plenty of local advise for the newcomers who want to enjoy our marvelous land. I've made this tour thinking about out of the box places that tourists usually don't visit in Sintra, whether it's because mostly only locals know them or they are hard to find. In my view, this tour offers Sintra in it's raw and authentic state away from the crowds with a lot of past secrets to share.

What To Expect

1. Castelo dos Mouros We will start our tour with a pick up at Sintra train Station and proceed to visit a ruined medieval village at the gates of the Moorish castle, there, we will see the remains of an archaeological excavation where i worked back in 2012 and is now an open air museum with old structures, graves popping off the ground and a museum with a lot of artifacts we found there. 45 minutes

2. Santuario da Peninha The seccond place we will visit lies in the middle of the Sintra forest where an old chapel lies on a top of a hill, this chapel is known as an old pilgrimage spot where a miracle happened. Another ruined building is also seen on this barren hill top, this ruined church has its foundations on the foundation of Portugal itself. Our journey will continue to this more place of the hill, away from the crowds and mostly known only by locals. For me one of the best views of all the Lisbon bay area. 30 minutes

3. Penedo de Adrenunes The last place we will visit will be a curious one. After a 15 minute walk deep down in the Sintra Forest, another hill top facing the westernmost point of continental europe can be visited. The place called Penedo de Adrenunes, gives us the Stonehenge vibes. Despite archaeological artifacts never been found here, it is believed that this place was used by our ancestors 5000 years ago. 45 minutes

Best Tour Guide in Sintra

Diogo gave me a beautiful tour around Sintra in his stylish electric car. Such a positive guy, was really fun and also interesting to hear about the history of Sintra. Would love to come back again and in that case would definitely choose Diogo for another tour and best local tips. Highly recommended!

We are a maltese couple which we were in Sintra Portugal last week. We met the tour guy Diago with his amazing jeep and spent 4 hours with him. He knows the history inside out and he is such an amazing person , he speaks very good english. We will recommend him 100%. Hope to see you soon Adrian and Sandra

We’ve been living in Lisbon for a year and a half, and our day with Diogo was one of the absolute best days we’ve had in Portugal so far. I booked this tour as a birthday gift for my husband, who loves Sintra and wanted to learn more about its history. We hoped we would learn a lot, but what we didn’t expect was that we would have an incredible adventure and make a new Portuguese friend in the process! Diogo is an absolute gem. He’s so charismatic and has such a great sense of humor, and his depth of knowledge about Portugal, its history, and its ancient civilizations is absolutely incredible. I can’t imagine anyone who wouldn’t enjoy their day with Diogo; if you love history, you’ll be fascinated, and if you don’t, you’ll still have a total blast laughing and chatting with him all day! We came away with a whole new level of understanding about our new country, its history, and its culture, along with some incredibly special memories which are already among our favorites from our entire time in Portugal thus far. Personally, I think this tour is one of the hidden gems among all the tourism experiences Portugal had to offer—and if you’ve happened to find it, you’re well on your way to one of the most memorable travel days you’ll ever have!

Diogo was amazing! This tour was the highlight of our Portugal trip. He was so knowledgeable of the region and history - I wish we had more time to continue driving all day! He is very in tune with what the group is interested in and made the day fun and very special to us. Definitely recommend!
