Itinerary

  • Hakone Amazake Tea House

Mr Yamamoto is the thirteenth generation manager of Amasake Chaya Teahouse. Together with his family, including potential 14th generation managers son and daughter, their quaint little establishment serves thirsty Tokaido travellers with the sweet, warm, amasake their family has been serving for four centuries. Due to the lightweight construction of the teahouse, there have been many versions of the building over the centuries, on both sides of the road. The current structure was refurbished to traditional style in 2009 ā€“ the thatched roof doesnā€™t use a single nail. Be sure also to check out their small museum with original feudal period Tokaido artifacts.

    1 hour

  • Lake Ashinoko

Lunch by Lake Ashi, a 700m deep crater lake with red tori gates in the water

    1 hour

  • Cedar Trees of Hakone Old Road

Cedar Avenue Hakone. Four centuries ago exactly, the second Edo Period Shogun, Tokugawa Hidetada, ordered the planting of sugi (Japanese Cedar, Cryptomeria japonica) along both sides of Tokaido to shade travellers as they made their way around the shoreline of Lake Ashinoko towards Hakone Checkpoint. 420 of these magnificant specimens remain, towering straight, fat, and proud into the Hakone sky along Cedar Avenue.

    30 minutes

  • Hakone Sekisho and Hakone Sekisho Museum

Tokaido had checkpoints at various intervals to ensure that travellers were bonefide and to protect the Shogun in the capital, Edo. Hakone was the closest checkpoint to Edo, so was one of the most severely policed. Perched between the waters of Lake Ashinoko and the steep mountainous terrain of Hakone, Tokaido travellers had no alternative but to submit to inspection.

    30 minutes

  • Yamanaka Castle Ruins

Back to 1590. Hojoā€™s western boundary is protected by Yamanaka Castle, literally meaning ā€œcastle in the mddle of the mountainā€. The site is true to its name, but despite impressive earthworks to create defences accentuating the siteā€™s naturally steep terrain, Yamanaka Castle is quick to fall to the might of the force from the west on its way along Tokaido eastwards to surround Odawara. A visit to the castle ruins today is rewarded with spectacular views from its highest point of Mt Fuji, weather permitting.

    30 minutes

  • Tokaido Odawara Shuku

Hike a 12km stretch of the Old Tokaido Foot Highway between Odawara and Mishima now preserved as a Japan Heritage Area

    5 hours

  • Mishima

Walk along Genbegawa World Water Heritage Area

Outstanding day trek through a beautiful landscape.

Published on Nov, 2024

Our adult family very much enjoyed learning the history, culture and natural beauty of the area while trekking along an ancient highway. Our guide, Tony was nothing short of outstanding in his knowledge and his attention to each person in our group.

Hikerā€™s Dream

Published on Oct, 2024

Tonyā€™s hiking program made my trip to Japan. It is a hikerā€™s dream 5 days. Each hike was carefully curated to give one a different and unique perspective on Japanā€™s natural landscapes. I never would have found the accommodations & dinners on my own which were a delightful variety from the beachfront glamping huts to traditional Japanese hotels. It was fantastic. Highly recommend.

A Five Day Hike of the Izu Peninsula

Published on Oct, 2024

Tony, who has lived in the area for many years and is very familiar with the land, the trees, and the culture, led the hike. We never experienced a dull moment. We loved the variety of seafood served at meals and the accommodations arranged, such as a rustic beach house, Ryokens, and a Japanese-style hotel. The countryside was amazing, with lush green forests and mountain views. The tour included spectacular waterfalls, wasabi plants growing in the rivers, a pirate ship on a lake, mountain vistas, and beautiful forests. Tony was a great host and ambassador for the area; he was very friendly and accommodating to everyoneā€™s needs. It was a pleasure to be in an area of Japan where you felt away from the crowds.

A Great Taste of Japan From a Local's Perspective

Published on Oct, 2024

I really enjoyed my 5 day experience with Tony's crew. I doubt there is another tour like this in Japan. The tour is a great combination of history, great scenery, easy hiking, varied accommodation and eating like the locals. Tony's local knowledge, generosity and enthusiasm for the Izu Peninsular made the tour a fantastic and memorable experience.

Great introduction to Japan, walking the trails of Izu Peninsula.

A great 5 days with Tony. We had such an amazing experience, the history of the area (so many important events to Japan happened in this area) was walked. Covered a great variety of walking but highlight were the places we stayed and the variety of meals we had. Truly deep experience of Japan. Tony has lived in this part of Japan for many years so lots of local knowledge too. It fitted what we wanted, at the start of our trip to Japan have an in-depth guided walk. Itā€™s so close to Tokyo and then east to go on from finishing point
