If you take a glance over the vast, dreary piece of land, you’ll notice a white pillar of smoke rising from the bare surface of the mountain… Owakudani is one of most famous viewpoints in Hakone, where you can observe the intense volcanic activity from up close. It is said that this place came to be thanks to a phreatic eruption and pyroclastic flow that occurred almost 3000 years ago. The peculiar sulfur smell that spreads throughout the area was the reason behind its second name from the past, Jigokudani (Hell Valley). One of the local specialties is the “black eggs”, whose main trait is in the shells that turn black due to a chemical reaction with geothermal energy and volcanic gas. Head to this unique site using the ropeway, and enjoy a nice view of Hakone and Mt. Fuji along the way.

Awesome day to Hakone and Mt. Fuji area

Booked this on Viator and the communication with Azu International Tour prior to the tour was great. We were able to tailored our itinerary, added a stop at Narusawa Ice Cave and modified the drop off location to our hotel in Kawaguchiko at the end of the tour. Our guide Irfan was awesome and he speaks fluent English. Although there was an unforeseen traffic delay at the beginning of our tour due to an accident, he managed to accommodate our interests and we accomplished a lot on the tour. The view at Hakone Shrine was beautiful, the ice caves were amazing and we had a boat ride at Lake Kawaguchiko. Car was comfortable and Irfan was a great driver.

An unforgettable tour of Mount Fuji
Published on Mar, 2024
My wife and I have visited Japan on five different occasions. We’ve often had passing glimpses of Mount Fuji from the window of a Shinkansen or tour bus. On this most recent family trip we decided to sign up with a guided tour offered by Viator, and was finally able to view Mount Fuji as we had dreamed. Our tour was greatly enhanced by our guide, Abbas, who was very nice, and did a great job finding us spectacular vistas of this sacred mountain. We even got to go on a speed boat tour on Lake Kawaguchikoi to get more unique views of Fuji. These are memories that will last a lifetime.
Fantastic day trip to Hakone and Mt Fuji.

There were so many memorable parts. We had perfect weather for viewing Mt Fuji. Some of the best parts were just seeing it from all different vantage points, taking the rope way down Hakone, and seeing the volcanic smoke coming out from the mountainside at Hakone.
