Overview

This is an informative tour. There is no better way to learn about the history of Cape town other than going on a city tour. It brings all the history of South Africa to the travelers as this was the main point of contact for the European settlers who eventually occupied South Africa. This is also a great tour that takes travelers to all the major buildings and all the landmarks in the city. Travelers have the opportunity of exploring first hand places like the museums, colourful houses of Bo-Kaap and the city. Travelers also learn about how the cultural diversity is copping with co-existing after a long history of racial discrimination. This is a beautiful city which is scooping awards annually and this tour will bring travelers up close to all these attractions. Some of which are the blue flag beaches, Table Mountain, Signal Hill, Lions' Head, Company gardens and much more. This tour is also a sightseeing tour intermixed with a health walk and interaction in the city.

Itinerary

  • Table Mountain

One of the 7 New Wonders of Nature and the only one in a city. This iconic landmark draws thousands of travelers annually and is one of the two most popular attraction in Cape Town. Take a view of the city of Cape Town and the hikers snaking up this land mark. This is an ideal photo location and has amazing views of the entire bay all the way up to Blouberg beach. There is a rotating cable car taking travelers to the top.

    20 minutes

  • Bo-kaap

The colourful houses are a major attraction in this city. Take a walk on the cobbled stone streets and get a selfie with the locals. Learn the local language as you interact with the locals. Visit the Bo-Kaap museum and learn the history of the Malay community who settled here after 1652. Explore this charming place and see why it is a popular movie location. This is a vibrant place with a lot of international students learning at local universities. Shop for curios in the art and craft shops and the stalls from the locals. Grab yourself a selfie to these beautiful coloured houses.

    30 minutes

  • Company's Gardens

Visit this amazing garden at the heart of the city of Cape Town. Take a leisurely walk as you admire the fauna and flora in this place. The trees are the star attractions, the ginko tree, the towering rubber tree, the ancient saffron and the 80 year old bamboo plantation. The garden is also home to South African National Gallery which houses impressive permanent collection of South African art. There is African, British, French, Dutch and Flemish art also. Another form of attraction is offered in the wide range of critters that include the pigeons, Egyptian Geese, herons, rodents and an aviary with dozens of bird species. Buy a bag of peanuts and feed the squirrels who would be glad to scamper up your arm for a snack of peanuts. The beauty of this garden is exceptional and to top it up there is a restaurant serving South Africa food. In the garden is The Iziko Museum with a planetarium which is also worth a visit.

    30 minutes

  • Iziko Slave Lodge

A visit to this Museum is very informative and emotional. Take a walk in the Slave Lodge and learn about the participation of the Cape in the Slave Trade. How it all started at the Cape and the sources of slaves who were part of this heart wrenching experience. Learn how the slaves were bought and auctioned and how they survived at the Cape. The social aspect of slavery at the Cape including the names, families and punishment meted out to the slaves as they tried to run for freedom. Their contribution to economic development at the Cape that includes the famous wine industry and in the farming community. Effects of abolishment of slavery and how it was perceived by the local slave masters.

    20 minutes

  • District Six Museum

District Six Museum is also an interesting part of the city tour. It tells of the emotional forced removals of Capetonians just like any other city in South Africa. This was during the period 1968 after a law was passed which set aside some of the areas close to the cities as designated for the whites. Learn about how it affected the non-whites up to this day. Also learn about how the city fathers reacted then and now with the unending court battles between those affected and the city fathers. Also learn how it resulted in the creation of the so called townships which are all over South African cities.

    20 minutes

  • Castle of Good Hope

The centre of civilian rule at the Cape and the oldest standing colonial building in South Africa. Take a walk in this place where a canon is also fired everyday at 12 noon. Learn about how the respective governments between the Dutch and the British used this place for administrative purposes. Explore the William Fehr Art collection and the former house of the highest order of respect at the Cape then. Visit the place used to try cases and the former hanging chambers. A look at the collection of cutlery used by the authorities leaves you in awe.

History tour

Published on Mar, 2025

Ordain is very knowledgeable and takes great pride in sharing the history. He shares the history during the drive, and not just at the various stops. You will get plenty of history during this tour. For me, the highlight was District 6 and the Museum, and I would have liked to stay in the museum a little longer to peruse the very personal exhibits. One thing to keep in mind is that Ordain is willing to pick you up in any Cape Town hotel, and not just the ones listed in the Viator dropdown list. So you can reach out to him if you don’t find your hotel in the dropdown and want to change the pickup point.

Great half day experience

Published on Oct, 2024

What a great half day experience. After two guests didn’t appear I was the only passenger on a wet and grey day. Ordain’s historical knowledge is second to none and he combined this with interest in his guest and a flexible schedule. Highlights included: the Company’s Garden, Green Square market, District 6, the Castle of Good Hope, Bokaap, Signal Hill, Camps Bay and the V & A Waterfront. Highly recommend.
