This will be the highlight of your trip through the Icefields Parkway! A great way to explore a glacier. The Athabasca Glacier is easily accessible and the tours are moderate difficulty suitable for active people seeking a meaningful experience. Great value for families, we supply all the gear required to comfortably explore the glacier. IceWalks' guides are ACMG certified. Your friendly and informative guide will explain the natural history of the area and show you the many ice formations on the glacier.

What To Expect

1. Athabasca Glacier IceWalks' ACMG certified guides will meet you in the Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre parking lot and gear you up for an unforgettable 3 hour interpretive glacier adventure. You will be shuttled a short distance to the trailhead. This 5 km roundtrip walking tour will take you onto the Athabasca Glacier and into the incredible landscape that is the Canadian Rockies. You will learn the rich history of the glacier and you will have spectacular views of the glaciated mountains. You will learn about and explore the many incredible ice formations on the glacier, which include: crevasses, mill wells (waterfalls into the depths of the ice), meltwater streams, and icefalls (from a safe distance). This will be the highlight of your trip on the Icefields Parkway. The pictures you take will capture the memories of a lifetime. No technical climbing experience required! Our tours are moderate in difficulty, suitable for young children who enjoy hiking and active seniors. 3 hours

Amazing experience! Ann is a very patient and informative guide. Very happy with the tour. Well organized and we were provided with cleats and waterproof pants.

This was a quality experience from start to finish! Kelly, our guide, was friendly, helpful, and very knowledgeable. We could tell that safety was a high priority and she really wanted us to have a great day - which we did! IceWalks was very well prepared with gear - (we couldn't bring our hiking poles because of limited luggage space so we REALLY appreciated having those!) IceWalks even had extra clothes (which we didn't need but it was good that this was available). Kelly gave us plenty of opportunities to get some really great pictures as well as teach us lots of great information about the Athabasca Glacier. I would highly recommend this Guided Glacier hike!

We didn't know what to expect with our visit to the Glacier but upon arrival and seeing the large groups going on vehicles that drive you UP to Glacier, we were so glad we booked this tour to walk on it instead. Our small group was great and it was a once in a lifetime experience for us to actually walk up the ice/snow of the glacier. Our guide provided extra layers of jackets, pants, hats and gloves. He had walking sticks and was able to quickly adapt to the needs our of group. One thing we did that the standard Ice Fields tour does not do was walk all over the glacier. The visitors that rode the vehicle up were restricted to one little part of the glacier and could not explore the glacier while we traversed all over it because we had a guide (essential to have a guide as they know where NOT to walk. We saw crevices and the temps had warmed up enough to create a small stream of glacier melt and we filled our water bottles. The standard tour does nothing like this - I was so glad we booked the IceWalk. It was fantastic!

Adam was great guide! He made sure we were all safe and provided extra gear so we stayed warm and dry. They are prepared for travelers that don’t have the proper gear which was an unexpected blessing - proper boots, rain pants, gloves, raincoats, hats, poles, crampons. My teen son said this was the best tour we’ve take by far!
