Overview

This is a tour of the island not to be missed, as we go from the sea to the mountains a little bit of everything. Passing by the peak of Arieiro at 1810m altitude with fantastic landscape. Walking tour along a winding levada with the Laurissilva forest. We pass through the agricultural fields, and visit a typical inhabited house. We visit viewpoints and sites overlooking the sea that delight visitors. A tour from the sea to the mountains.

    The peak of Arrieiro is the highest peak accessible by car on the island of Madeira. Every day it offers an incredible and different panorama provided by mother nature. It has an altitude of 1810 meters of altitude.

    In the heart of the Madeira Natural Park and with a fantastic forest around this valley.

  • Balcoes de Ribeiro Frio

    The Balcões Viewpoint is located at the end of Vereda dos Balcões. Starting at Ribeiro Frio, this small trail follows the Levada da Serra do Faial, giving access to the Miradouro dos Balcões. From this viewpoint you can enjoy magnificent views over the Ribeira da Metade valley. You can also see the Cordillera Central of the island, including the two highest peaks, Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo, as well as, on a clear day, the cliff of Penha D'Águia.

    The Centro de Casas Tradicionais de Santana features some of Santana's typical houses. We also visited typical inhabited houses. Close to Santana City Hall is the Santana Traditional Houses Center. It is a preservation area, expanded by the municipality of Santana, in memory of the local heritage. Here we find some typical Santana houses, all adapted to current use, where you can buy a wide variety of local products and traditional handicrafts.

Awesome trip with an awesome driver Wilson!

We were picked up bt Wilson, our driver and guide for the day. He was very knowledgable and friendly with a good sense of of humour. We climbed upto Pico do Areeiro which was rainy and cloudy so we stayed in the 4x4 but the ride up and back down was great due to Wilson’s chat and knowledge. Next to Ribeiro Frio for a walk along a levada to a balcony with stunning views (the sky’s had cleared) then down for a drink at a local bar followed by the off road experience which was both exciting exhilerating if not a little hairy at times, lots of mud and bouncing around took us to Santana for a visit to a real Santana house over 200 hrs old. We then drove for lunch at Quita do Furão followed by a scenic drive to Poto da Cruz for rum tasting and some magnificent wave sin the bay. On to the eastern tip of the island from more amazing views of both the North and South coasts, followed by a scenic drive back to Funchal. An amazing excursion which was only made better by our driver, the wonderful Wilson who was funny bright and knowledgable and made adjustments to the day to take account of the weather. Highly recommend this trip which would not have been half as good without WILSON our awesome driver!
