Overview

Located in Japan's largest national park, the Hidakasanmyaku-Erimo-Tokachi National Park, Mount Apoi offers a unique experience. Although only 810 meters in elevation, this low mountain is home to around 80 species of alpine plants and rich natural beauty. Nearly 20 of these species are endemic, making the percentage of unique plant life on this mountain the highest in the world. This special program combines hiking with guided commentary, allowing you to learn the story of how local residents protect and preserve this exceptional natural environment.

What To Expect

1. Apoidake Geopark Visitor Center Meet at Mt. Apoi Geopark Visitor Center Meet the guide, final gear check, safety talk, explanation of the itinerary, and restroom break 15 minutes

2. Start the hike (departure from the Visitor Center) Climb Mount Apoi, a UNESCO World Geopark site.

3. Tour the cultivation facility (brief explanation by the guide on plant protection efforts) 15 minutes

4. 1st station to the regeneration experiment site (near the 5th station mountain hut) 1 hour 30 minutes

5. Visit the regeneration experiment site (guide explains the nature restoration project) Visit to an experimental alpine plant regeneration site near the fifth station of Mt Apoi. Every year, flower seedlings grown by local junior high school students are transplanted. 15 minutes

6. Break at the 5th station mountain hut 10 minutes

7. 5th station mountain hut to Apoi-dake summit. From the ridge of the mountain near the seventh station, a spectacular view of the sea of Hokkaido can be seen, where abundant marine products are harvested. The proximity of the mountains and the sea is a unique feature of Mount Apoi. 1 hour 45 minutes

8. Rest at the summit *Depending on the situation, this may include a lunch break 30 minutes

9. Descend from the summit to Geopark Visitor Center 2 hours 50 minutes

10. Apoidake Geopark Visitor Center The tour ends.
