Maybe it's my morbid interest in ancient places adorned with human bones, nevertheless, once I learned that there was such a place in Portugal, I knew I had to book a tour! I found such a tour with the walled city and highlights of Evora. Our guide, Jaime, contacted me a few days prior to inquire about dietary preferences, etc. We met up on the morning of the tour with no problems whatsoever. Once safely in Jaime's vehicle, he talked a little about the things we would see that day and he also gave us a couple of different choices of things to see along the way. We stopped at a beautiful old monastery now used as a boutique hotel.
We said we would be interested in seeing the Almendres Cromlech, or the Stonehenge of Portugal. On the road to the prehistoric site, we saw cork trees, some of which had recently been harvested. Jaime told us many things about the trees, the harvest and methods. We were impressed with the Almendres Cromlech circle, too. It is thought to be even older than Stonehenge.
We were soon on our way to Evora where we saw the remaining portions of the wall, enjoyed a fabulous and UNCROWDED walk, and many lovely things including the requisite churches. Jaime suggested a restaurant he was familiar with for lunch. One of the best meals we had while in Portugal - we ordered tapas style and he suggested a few regional favorites. Everything was polished off with no leftovers! Gee, that melted cheese dish was just delicious!
Before heading back to Lisbon we stopped to see the bone chapel, the reason for booking the tour in the first place. It did not disappoint! Though smaller than others I have seen, it's quite a spectacle. Highly recommended.
A full day was spent, and since this was our first tour in Portugal, it set a very high standard for those to come. A fulfilling and comprehensive trip to Evora! A praiseworthy experience!
