Overview

This tour will take us, together with a local accompanist, to discover the real Padua. We will take a walk around the city to discover the most important sights and monuments. We will see Prato della Valle, the largest square in the city of Padua and among the largest in Europe, which with its 78 statues is an album of the important characters of Padua. The Basilica of Sant’Antonio or “Il Santo”, a destination for millions of pilgrims each year and a romantic mix of styles and cultures from all corners of the world. Along the cobblestone streets we will reach the medieval heart of the historic center. We will see the ancient Ghetto of the city that with its narrow streets has become a meeting place for young students. Then the Squares, Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza della Frutta with the views of the Palazzo della Ragione and often enlivened by the stalls of the Market and the swarming of people under the "Salone". We will reach Piazza dei Signori, a meeting place for Paduans at the aperitif and once the home of the Lords of the city. Palazzo Bo, headquarters of the University of Padua, founded in 1222, which has always attracted students from all over the world. We will conclude the tour in the most typical of manners: we will stop for a coffee in the historic "Caffè Pedrocchi".

    Piazza della Frutta once also called Piazza del Peronio is one of the numerous squares that characterize the historic center of Padua. It was for centuries, with Piazza delle Erbe, the commercial center of the city. One of the largest markets in Italy takes place in the two squares. The square is dominated by the massive Palazzo della Ragione, part of the large Palazzo Comunale and the Torre degli Anziani.

    Piazza delle Erbe once also called piazza delle Biade or piazza del Vino but also piazza della Giustizia is one of the numerous squares that characterize the historic center of Padua. For centuries, with Piazza della Frutta, it was the commercial center of the city. One of the largest markets in Italy takes place in the two squares. Unlike Piazza dei Signori, the theater of civic celebrations, Piazza delle Erbe was the site of popular celebrations. The square is dominated by the massive Palazzo della Ragione, part of the large Palazzo Comunale.

    Piazza dei Signori is one of the numerous squares that characterize the historic center of the city of Padua. For centuries it was the scene of civic celebrations, tournaments and a representative space of the city compared to the largest squares of the Herbs and Fruit that had greater commercial aim. The square is dominated by the famous Clock Tower.

    The Palazzo della Ragione was built in 1218. The upper floor, called Il Salone, is a large frescoed hall, one of the largest medieval halls in the world. The palace separates two squares: Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza dei Frutti, home to the daily fruit and vegetable market.

    The Market is located in the center of the city, in a large building called Palazzo della Ragione. In the so-called Covered Market “Sotto il Salone”, there are various gastronomic specialty shops where you can find all sorts of Paduan specialties and excellences. Here you will find butchers, fishmongers, greengrocers and many other shops selling oil, meat, cheeses and much more.

    To the south of the Piazza delle Erbe, a labyrinth of narrow streets winds up forming the Jewish Ghetto, operating since 1603 and abolished in 1797, the year in which, under the pressure of the French Revolution, Jews were declared free and equal.

Our guide, Camilla, was fantastic! She led my husband and I and another couple, who spoke Italian only, for over 3 hours. She gave the tour in both Italian and English and we learned so much about Padua! She is obviously knowledgeable and her enthusiasm for her city is palpable.
