Overview

There is no better way to experience the real side of Crete, than to traverse the island's unspoiled soil, swim in its crystal waters and stroll down its traditional villages. This hiking tour of the Samaria Gorge will give you the opportunity to do all 3 and at your own pace. Early in the morning, you will be picked up from designated spots around Chania via a luxurious bus and reach the starting point of your tour in Omalos Plateau around 7 am. Shadowed by the adjacent White Mountains and with plenty of drinking water to be found along the way in many natural springs, this self-paced hike will create unique memories for every traveler. Behind your group, there will always be a hiking escort to ensure everyone's safety and provide assistance if needed. At around 17:00 you will start your trip back to the place where you were picked up from.

Itinerary

Omalos

Early in the morning, you will be picked up from designated spots around Chania via a luxurious bus and reach the starting point of your tour in Omalos Plateau around 7am. The panoramic view of the gorge from the plateau is a photophile's delight, so after short stop for pictures and/or breakfast, you will hop on the bus and depart for the traditional village of Sougia. It is there that you will hop on a boat and sail along the coast of Crete till you reach Agia Roumeli.

Samaria Gorge National Park

No holiday in Crete is complete without a trip through the 2nd longest gorge in Europe, the Gorge of Samaria. It is the longest and most imposing ravine in the Mediterranean. It is 16.5 kilometers in length from the position of Xyloskalo and terminates at Agia Roumeli in the Libyan Sea. We will arrive around 7 o’clock in the morning and after a short break you will start walking. Descending the 600 wooden steps you will be intrigued by the beauty and serenity of this massive gorge which is shadowed by the white Mountains. You will come across the church of St. Nicolas, built on the ruins of an ancient temple. Afterwards you will reach “Portes” or “Iron Gates”, the narrowest pass of the gorge. The hike ends at Agia Roumeli.

Agia Roumeli is the home of one Greece's most beautiful beaches. Nestled between mountains, this beach boasts some great scenery. A small village at the exit of the Samaria gorge on the south shores of Sfakia in Crete, with unique beauty and interesting historical background.

Pick up/Drop off is conducted only is select spots in Chania. Depending on your location, you will be advised on the time and place after booking.
Be sure to wear comfortable hiking shoes for the trek through the gorge
It is advisable to bring the following items with you: sunscreen, sunglasses and hat
It is important to stay hydrated, so bring a bottle of water (you can refill it in the gorge's springs) and a light snack (fruits etc.)
Υou can swim at Agia Roumeli beach just after you exit the gorge so make you have a swimsuit and beach towel with you
Τhe entrance fee to Samaria as well as the boat fee are paid with cash on the spot
Half way down the gorge lies the old village of Samaria, which has a telephone for communication with the police, a pharmacy, and two mules to transport injured persons.
In the village of Samaria, take a quiet walk around and you may catch a glimpse of the endangered kri‐kri. They are usually very friendly towards people!

We had a wonderful time on this trip. All of the logistics were really well done and our guide was incredible. It is a really really long day but so worth it. We got to the gorge first of all the tour groups so we really felt like we had it to ourselves for long stretches. Hard to beat for the price.

Great hike

Long rocky walk down but well worth it. There were 600 people total that did hike yesterday, less than usual. Plenty of water and WCs along the way. Guide Ingred was fantastic, caring, knowledgeable and good sense of humor.

Beautiful hike and well organised tour company

What a beautiful hike! Our tour guide (Thanasis) was really helpful and we felt we had support available if needed. My partner and I wore trail running shoes and didn’t find the hike too difficult. We took a nice steady pace and still managed to complete it in good time. Incredible views the whole way along and a refreshing swim in the ocean to finish it off.

event for us. It was an early start with a 0555 pickup and a late finish with the hotel drop off in Kalamaki at 2045. However, the bus ride up and back were worth it, thanks going to Nikos our brilliant driver. The scenery in the gorge just got better and better, and resembled a Hollywood sci-fi or Jurassic Park set! Fortunately it was quite cloudy which kept the potential heat away, but we did have some rain at times which made the rocks increasingly slippery to negotiate. Our amazing guide Ingrid had warned us about the potential for heavy rain by early afternoon and to try and get down to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli before then. This turned out to be life saving advice since we did experience an intense thunderstorm while we were in on of the village tavernas. The intense rainfall caused flash flooding and landslides in the gorge, trapping some walkers with one fellow walker sadly being struck by a rock and losing her life. This demonstrates how challenging and potentially dangerous this walk is, but it is also spectacular. I would like to thank Ingrid for her expert organisation of the tour, she really is a star.
