According to some, it served as a drain cover within the open-air temple, which stood opposite to its current location. On the other hand, others suggest that it was utilized for the purpose of allowing blood to drip through during animal sacrifices. In present times, a popular myth circulates, claiming that if a dishonest person places their hand inside the artifact's open mouth, their hand will be forever lost. Numerous replicas of this artifact can be found not only in Italy but also in other countries. However, the original artifact is situated within the covered entrance of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin church in Rome.

Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta is a charming and compact square that is surrounded on two sides by the elegant cypress trees of the Benedictines' garden.
On the northern side of the square, you will find the Villa del Priorato di Malta.
