Overview

Starting from Nagano City or any of the Nagano's 5 main ski resorts (Hakuba, Shiga Kogen, Nozawa Onsen, Myoko Kogen, Madarao Kogen) , we will pick your party up in our private vehicle to take you on your private tour and drop you off back at the pick up location or in Nagano City. On this tour, you will visit the famous Jigokudani Monkey Park and learn all about what makes the resident monkeys so unique, and enjoy lunch at a nearby restaurant and experience Naganoā€™s renowned food culture. Guests will also have a chance to stroll the charming streets of the historic town of Obuse, and enjoy viewing its remaining Edo period buildings, as well as explore Zenko-ji, one of Japanā€™s oldest and most important Buddhist temples, and home to the first known Buddhist statue to be brought to Japan. A Sake tasting experience with detailed explanations from your guide is also included(non-alcoholic options available).

Itinerary

  • Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park

    Once your tour begins, you will board our private tour vehicle and leave the city behind as you are transported to the Snow Monkey Park, located in the onsen town Yudanaka at the foot of the mountains. Your guide will take you along the forest trail which leads to the park and into Jigokudani - rather dramatically translating to 'Hell's Valley'. Home to the only troop of monkeys in the entire world known to bathe in hot springs, there are no barriers separating you from the wild monkeys, making this a unique and memorable experience. Your guide will introduce these truly curious creatures and provide you time to enjoy the unique experience of observing them in close proximity. Make sure to bring your camera as you`re going to need it!

    Your guide will then accompany back along the trail and you will enjoy a traditional layered Japanese 'Bento' Box Lunch with variety that is sure to please any tastes. This specially prepared bento is locally sourced and offers a visually pleasing and decadent experience that will leave you wanting more! This lunch is designed to match the season and highlight the best of Nagano's renowned food culture.

  • Obuse-machi

    Well-fed and content, it's time to head-out of Yudanaka to explore the picturesque town of Obuse, and its remaining Edo-style buildings. Known for itsĀ historic character, chestnut delicacies and sake breweries, walking the streets of Obuse provides an incredible opportunity to sample some local specialties and appreciate the local culture of Nagano and Japan as a whole in this stroll through time. After spending some time in Obuse, you will once more board the private vehicle bound for Nagano City

  • Zenko-ji Temple

    Zenko-ji Temple, as a registered National Treasure, the temple is the most important cultural site in Nagano and one of the oldest and most important Buddhist temples in the entire country! A place of true historic importance, full of legends and myths, you will be guided around the temple before your guide will give you the opportunity to explore the surrounding precinct of smaller temples, shops, and food by yourself. As Japanā€™s second largest producer of sake, Nagano is synonymous with sake and no visit to the region is complete without delving into Japanā€™s most famous beverage. Your guide with lead your party to a local producer of sake, and introduce how to differentiate one brew from another as you taste a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The information provided by your guide will allow you to continue to enjoy sake in a meaningful way even after the tour concludes.

Brilliant private snow monkey experience

Our family of four were fortunate to experience this private Snow Monkey tour with Endo as our guide. We were picked up in a luxury van and driven to the Snow Monkey park. After a 30 min hike through beautiful forest, we got to see the monkeys in their hot springs. They were super cute and the scenery was just spectacular. Following a delicious (and all included) traditional Japanese lunch nearby, we visited a museum in Obuse, which has artworks by one of Japanā€™s most famous artists. Last, we visited one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Japan in Nagano. Our guide, Endo, was fabulous. A former English and Social Studies teacher, he provided so much valuable information and was delightful. He also gave us choices throughout the day and made it a very personal and warm experience. Highly recommend!

Jens great knowledge of the monkeys and area is exactly why we went for the tour. His friendliness is what we hoped for. He didn't disappoint. We had a wonderful day seeing the monkeys and visiting some of the surrounding area. Truly an exceptional day!

Snow Monkeys and much more

My wife and I went to see the snow monkeys and included in the tour was lunch, Obusa town visit, and Nagano temple visit. Our guide, Jens, was very kind and patient. He adjusted our tour to our desires. He is very knowledgeable on many subjects and we had fun teaching each other new things.

This was a wonderful day tour for our private party of 4, taking us to the Zenko-ji Temple, sake tasting and the Snow Monkey park, and including an outstanding lunch at Horarutei. We were lucky enough to have Joyce as our guide, which made our trip extra special. She was extremely professional and knowledgeable and attentive/considerate to the party's requirements. We would have no hesitation in recommending this day tour to anyone!

Our guide for the day was Joyce. What a wonderful guide! She had a great cheerful disposition and engaged with all members of our group. The trip was a wonderful diverse experience highlighted by the snow monkeys. We had a great day with the playful primates and got many great pictures. The bento box lunch was very authentic and presented beautifully. Following lunch, we headed to a town where the artist Hokusai, who is famous for The Great Wave, has a museum and the animated vendors were happy to share samples of their wares. We finished by exploring the Buddhist temple and sake tasting. What a great day, a great itinerary, and especially our great guide Joyce! This tour is exceptional and highly recommended.
