  • Baldwin Street: The Steepest Street in the World

    In the 19th century, British surveyor Charles Kettle superimposed an orderly grid that had worked well on relatively flat terrain on a towering hillside in New Zealand. Thanks to Kettle’s misguided efforts, a residential street in Dunedin known as Baldwin Street has a 19-degree slope. Guinness World Records determined that Baldwin Street’s nearly 35-degree gradient is the steepest street in the world.

    Otago University was established in 1874 and is the oldest of the New Zealand universities. The Clock Tower is a distinguished piece of architecture dating from 1878 and features an early use of local basalt stone on a dramatic and large scale, emphasising the value placed in Otago on higher learning. Although the interior has been largely altered, its exterior remains mostly unchanged and along with the Chemistry Building, the School of Mines and Marama and Allen Halls, forms part of an outstanding group of well related buildings which was erected in the period of Dunedin's pre-eminence and prosperity.

Excellent day in Dunedin

There were 4 of us (all adults) from the US traveling on a cruise and one of our port stops was in Dunedin. The tour guide picked us up right on time. The day was well planned and explained throughout the tour. We stopped at the railway station, the university, Baldwin street (steepest street in the world), a castle, a beach, the albatross center. We even got a chance to stop at an ice cream shop (my mom told use to get some Hokey Pokey ice cream and it was amazing). The whole day was incredible. Gave us a very good history of the area and importance of the locations. The van was very comfortable. It seats 7 in the back so we all had plenty of room. Something that I probably should have already known, but didn't think about until we were on the road, the hills can be very curvy, up and downhill. Just a heads up. We would 100% book again if given the chance. Great day!

It was great to explore more hours at Larnah castle, peninsula beauty from hill top. Had enjoyable drive along the peninsula waterfronts, residents, and gardens. Nice weather in spring time and nice people to interact with everywhere. Dunedin is a beautiful place to stay even 5 days and explore all around the peninsula. Lovely green landscape, bluish water bodies, yellowish flowers, golden sunlight, silver clouds….. All at one go in Dunedin in Oct 2024. Still all above colours in my eyes. I love to go Dunedin again and again.

Amazing Dunedin Tour with Billy and a must see place in NZ

It was a great day trip at Dunedin city and Otago Peninsula Tour. My guide and tour operator Billy was a very good man. He helped me to move around important places in Dunedin. Billy has very good knowledge about this city, culture and he was very passionate in his job and business. With his great enthusiasm and support, I visited Baldwin Street which is world’s steepest street, Dunedin Railway station, Otago University, Larnach Castle and touring around Otago Peninsula. Billy explained me everything very clearly and answered my all questions. He was very friendly and maintained patience when I took 2 to 3 hours tour in Larnach Castle tour. Billy took me to world famous Albatross centre and helped me taking up a tour there. I highly recommend travellers to take up this tour from this operator and enjoy company and help from Billy….. A Sunny Day in Otago Penninsula

I was frantically looking for tours that I could do in and around Dunedin as there were a lot of things closed after the city flooding. I happened upon this tour. Billy picked me up at my hotel in Dunedin and took me to most of the great highlights in and around Dunedin. We luckily had a day of great weather for the visit the sites. We first stopped at Signal Hill, Baldwin street and Railway Station for some quick photos and facts before heading towards Otago Peninsula. Billy asked if i was interested in visiting Lanarch castle or Sandfly beach instead since it was such nice day out. We decided to go to Sandfly beach and get some exercise instead. We got some amazing shots and views of the beach ocean but also luckily ran into some of the resident sea lions and fur seals. After climbing back up to the car we heading off excitingly to the Royal Albatross Center. Sadly the road was closed on the way to the Albatross Center, Billy quickly came up with 3 new suggestions - head back to Lanarch castle to tour the gardens, grab some quick food in Portobello, and then quickly visit St.Clair Beach. So we headed off to those locations to experience them. Billy is an attentive and excited tour guide that will show you amazing locations around the otago peninsula. 5/5
