In a few pre-arrival emails, Alex had everything set up. He was quick to respond and patient with my vague description of what I was looking for. As a tour guide in Rome, returning to Lyon for the first time since I studied History there many years ago, my expectations were quite high.
I opted for the 4-hour private Panoramic Tour, with the request that it be tailored to my interests and experience. That is precisely what Alex provided. He arrived punctually at the agreed meeting place and greeted we with a smile, an extended hand, and a bit of cheeky humor. He laid out the plan for the day, gave a general introduction to the development of the city over time, and a history of where we were standing (the impressive Place Bellecour) before leading me straight to what he touted as the best croissant in the city. And of course he was right. After that, he had me eating out of his hand.
For the next 4 hours, Alex regaled me with histories, stories, anecdotes, perceptive observations, and clever commentary, reflecting the keen mind and the quick wit of a highly educated man with a life well lived in the city he loves and calls home. The balance of tone between the preparation of a consummate professional and the affability of a born performer was pitch perfect. I was informed, amused, and entertained. By the end of our time together, I had not only seen things and heard stories but met some of his colleagues, associates and friends.
My half-day with Alex was time and money well spent, and it set me up perfectly for the rest of my stay in Lyon. No drawbacks, no exceptions, no other side of the coin: Alex with New Generation Guides is the man to go to in Lyon.
