  • Jewish Museum of Rome

    Jewish Roma guides are the only guides authorized to take visitors privately inside the synagogues and the Jewish museum. You will visit the collection of the Museum and two synagogues, the Spanish and the Great one.

  • The Old Jewish Quarter

    We will walk the narrow streets of the former ghetto. We will see where Jews have been segregated for 330 years and where they still live today. We will meet locals and hear their stories from WWII. You will enhance your understanding of Rome by visiting the most ancient Jewish community outside of Israel

A Fantastic Tour, Highlight of Our Roman Stay

Did you know Jews have lived in Rome since the time of the Maccabees, 161 BCE or that since 1555, Jews were designated to live in a ghetto abutting the Tiber River? The long Jewish history of Roman Jews and a visit to the Great Synagogue explained by a long-time Jewish tour guide from Jewish Roma. If you're Jewish or just interested in a little alternative history, I suggest you sign up with Jewish Roma for a tour. Also, a tour of the Jewish catacombs is available...for my next trip. Micaela Povoncello, owner and chief tour guide, provided an eye-opening experience I commend to fellow travelers. Incisive, funny and warm, Micaela's deep understanding having grown up in the ghetto makes for a one-of-a-kind experience. I highly recommend it and lunch afterward in one of the adjacent kosher restaurants. The highlight of this visit to Rome.

Jewish ghetto/synagogue tour

While Rome has countless stunning sites and interesting walks, I so highly recommend this tour. Micaela Pavoncello - a Roman Jewish woman - is a superb guide, and she provides fascinating accounts about the Jewish ghetto and synagogues. The lives, persecution, resilience, and faith of the people are detailed. We sat in the Great Synagogue, listened intently to the community’s history, and walked the whole area. The commemorative stones placed in front of Holocaust victims’ homes are particularly compelling. During those three short hours, we were entranced. Micaela is a vibrant, captivating storyteller. For individuals interested in history, this tour will be a top memory of their Rome trip. Thank you Micaela!

This is a wonderful tour full of history brilliantly told and shared by Micaela Pavoncello, owner and tour guide par excellence! We were astounded to learn how ancient the Jewish presence has been in Rome and were delighted to enjoy Roman Jewish delicacies following our tour at the local restaurants and Jewish bakery. Our group was a mix of Jewish and non Jewish guests who all felt privileged to have found this meaningful experience. Do yourself a favor and book a tour with Micaela!
