Overview

Galata is the most cosmopolitan historical neighbourhood of Istanbul, it's also one of the most picturesque, because it overlooks the old town of Istanbul On this self-guided GPS audio tour, I'll lead you to the best spots to take pictures of the Galata Tower and panoramic cityscapes of Istanbul. You'll pass through the hardware market area, where shop blinds and walls are adorned with graffiti and a careful eye will spot intricate patterns to photograph. From there, the route carries on to a 450 year-old caravanserai, traditional Turkish houses, temples, art galleries, museums, and a local fish market with fish sandwich carts lining the shore. The tour is ready whenever you are and the audio plays automatically at exactly the right time and place using your smartphone's GPS and the VoiceMap mobile app, which also works offline. Please Note: The tour doesn't take you into the tower or include entry to the tower.

Meeting Point

The starting point is Sishane Park. The best way to get to the starting point is using the Metro line M2 (Yenikapi-Haciosman) and get off at the Şişhane station.

2. Galata Tower One of Istanbul's most iconic landmarks, the Galata Tower offers breathtaking views of the city. Originally built in the 14th century by the Genoese, this medieval stone tower allows visitors to gaze across the Bosphorus and immerse themselves in centuries of history.

3. Kamondo Stairs Take a stroll down the elegant Kamondo Stairs, a striking example of Art Nouveau architecture. These curving stairs were gifted by the prominent Kamondo family in the 19th century, and they serve as both a functional pathway and a beautiful symbol of Istanbul's multicultural past.

4. Spanning the Golden Horn, the Galata Bridge connects two sides of Istanbul’s rich history. As you cross, take in the lively scene of fishermen casting their lines and boats bustling below, a perfect blend of the old and the new in one of the city's most vibrant spots.
