Overview

Enoshima is often used as the setting for movies and various other productions, and is a popular spot visited by many tourists from Japan and abroad throughout the year. Eshima Shrine is famous as the god of marriage, entertainment, music, and wisdom, and there are plenty of gourmet foods and souvenirs to be had on the way there. Past the shrine is the Sea Candle, the symbol of Enoshima, and the Samuel Cocking Garden that surrounds it. The history of this botanical garden began when Samuel Cocking, an Irish trader based in Yokohama, purchased the land and began landscaping. It is still a popular spot for visitors to enjoy various flowers and illuminations each season. The Sea Candle, as its name suggests, is a "lighthouse of the sea. From the top floor, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Enoshima Island.

What To Expect

1. Enoshima Benzaiten Nakamisedori Enoshima Benzaiten Nakamise Dori is a historic shopping street that runs along the approach from the Enoshima Bodai no Torii, the entrance to Enoshima, to the vermilion torii of Ejima Shrine. The street is visited by many tourists throughout the year with an increasing number of stores that have remained unchanged from the past, as well as new stores. Along the narrow, gently ascending road, 2.75 meters wide and unchanged since the Edo period, there are various stores selling famous shirasu rice bowls and seafood, Enoshima's specialty, tako senbei (octopus crackers), manju (sweet buns), souvenir stores, and inns, always crowded with many tourists. 40 minutes

2. Enoshima Shrine is located on Enoshima Island and is known for its long history and beautiful scenery. It was founded by Minamoto no Yoritomo in the Kamakura period (1185-1333) and is surrounded by the sea. There are various shrines and buildings within the precincts of the shrine, and the red torii gate is particularly impressive. Enoshima Shrine is also an important place to pray for safety at sea and good catches of fish, and attracts many worshippers. 20 minutes

3. Samuel Cocking Garden and Sea Candle Observation Deck at Enoshima are charming spots where nature and art merge. At Samuel Cocking Garden, seasonal flowers are in full bloom, and the herb garden is especially fragrant and soothing. The Sea Candle Observation Deck offers a 360-degree panoramic view, and is a perfect vantage point from which to view Mount Fuji and Sagami Bay. Especially if you visit at night, the fantastic sea candle lights color the sea and create a romantic atmosphere.
