Overview

The program that we have outlined for this day leads us to discover the geological origin of Terceira Island. We will learn how volcanoes have shaped the landscape and the way of life of its people.

What To Expect

1. Monte Brasil Monte Brasil is the remnants of a volcano connecting the south coast of Terceira in the central Azores, overlooking the city of Angra do Heroísmo. Monte Brasil is flanked by two bays: the Bay of Angra (named for the city) to its east, and the Bay of Fanal to its west, and was used as a defensive point during the history of Angra, resulting in the construction of various forts and redoubts, including the Fortress of São João Baptista overlooking the city. 45 minutes

2. Furnas do Enxofre This area was designed to secure the visitation of this natural monument, allowing on one hand, safe access to all visitors, and on the other, protection of the habitats through the use of rustic material, integrated into the landscape. The circuit through the fumaroles and northern slope zone was adapted to existing paths and complemented with facilitated access. A set of informational panels support the interpretation of natural elements is present. 20 minutes

3. Algar do Carvao It is a remarkable volcanic chimney, which, contrary to what is generally observed in other cases, is not completely obstructed. With a 15 x 20 m crater it ends 90 m below in a clear water lagoon. 45 minutes

Must-do tour!

Marina is an extraordinarily warm person, and a wonderful guide around her native island. I highly recommend this tour, and don’t hesitate to go with children, I was there with my mom and three small daughters, and it was all well adapted (car seats in the car). Thanks again, Marina!

The perfect tour of Terceira

We were lucky enough to have the tour to ourselves with Marina! The tour itself was comprehensive, fascinating and entertaining! We ended up seeing almost the entire island (Monte Brasil, Praia da Vitoria, São Sebastião for lunch, Miradouro da Serra do Cume, Biscoitos and more. Overall the tour was exceptionally good value (delicious lunch at Os Moinhos as well as tickets for Algar do Carvão included in the price) and would easily recommend for anyone visiting Terceira.

Great day around the island

It was an amazing day visiting great places and seeing dramatic landscapes of Terceira Island. Our guide - Joaquim was very friendly and knowledgeable. I felt very well taken care of. Highlight for me was Algar de Carvalo, magic place out of this world. Absolutely recommended :)

Best tour in the Azores

Joaquim was a great guide. He was very positive, engaging with information and answering questions, and keeping the group dynamic flowing. The lunch was amazing. As a solo traveler this was a perfect option to see all the sights and meet new people. I did a few other tours on different islands in the Azores and this one was by far the best.

There is something very special about Terceira, besides cheese and cows!

Spent three days exploring Terceira with Joaquim Pires from Picos de Aventura - covered the small island - had fantastic days discovering this lush green land. My guide was exceptional in knowledge, historical facts ,as well as explaining the local cultural traditions. Have recommended to friends, acquaintances already.
