The Basilica of San Domenico is located on the slopes of the historic center of Siena, framed by the houses that "climb" under the Duomo, it is among the most important churches in the city especially for its link with the life of Saint Catherine of Siena. Built between 1226 and 1265 and enlarged during the fourteenth century, the Basilica of San Domenico has undergone numerous vicissitudes over the centuries, fires, military occupations, earthquakes, interventions and modifications, which have led to its unmistakable Gothic style appearance being defined Cistercian and is characterized by an original relationship between exterior and interior.

Duomo di Siena (visit outside), is a medieval church in Siena, Italy, dedicated from its earliest days as a Roman Catholic Marian church, and now dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. Built between 1214 and 1263, it has a Latin cross structure, a not very protruding dome with the bell tower next to it. Both the exterior and the interior are decorated in blocks of white marble which are alternated with thinner greenish black stripes, these are the representative colors of Siena.

Piazza del Campo has the shape of a shell divided into nine sections, in memory of the Nine Lords who governed the city at the end of the thirteenth century and amazes with its elegance and its unique shape in the world. Called this way because in the past it was a green space that hosted the market, Piazza del Campo today is the city's living room and the open-air arena where the famous Palio is run twice a year. Every year, on 2 July and 16 August, the piazza paved in pietra serena is covered with a layer of earth, composed of a mixture of tuff and sand, in which the horses of the districts challenge each other in a rapid race.

Excellent tour with Dina and our driver, Pietro! Dina is extremely knowledgeable and personable, and was very kind to let us stop for breaks or quick shopping when we saw something we wanted. She was very clear in her instructions regarding meeting points and times. Overall and excellent day with an excellent guide!
Enjoyable day trip

Teresa was our guide and Pino was our driver. We enjoyed both of them, and they made the trip very enjoyable. We really liked Sienna and Teresa gave us a lot of background on the area. We then went to San Gimignano for a wine tasting and lunch. They treated us very well there and the food kept coming. This, too, was enjoyable. We left hotel around 6:30 a.m. (they picked us up at 2 hotels) and returned around 6:00 p.m. It was a wonderful day and very glad to get out of the congestion in Rome.

Highlight of Our Vacation

Joseph (Jessippi) and Roberto took us to Sienna, San Gimignano and to the Tenuta Torciano winery. The most rememberable and most cherished part of this trip was when we met the owner and his family at the Tenuta Torciano winery. We had seen them and this winery on U-Tube videos and were so excited that we had an opportunity to meet them. Joseph shared much knowledge about this region and winery with us. My wife and I had just finished a 9-day Mediterranean cruise that started in Barcelona and ended in Rome, and we both have to say, without a doubt, that this tour was the highlight of our vacation.
