Overview

You will gain hands on experience with traditional tools and techniques of carving marble! I will guide you thru the process of carving a small relief sculpture that you can then take with you. You will have a unique perspective of the history and art of marble sculpture.

Meeting points

My new farm is on the main road just a few minutes south of the village Vivlos(Tripodes). Heading south, 30 meters after you pass the Shell gas station (before the Eco station) turn right up onto a paved drive through a metal fence. You can park to the right in front the the blue building.

Itinerary

Join us in our picturesque outdoor natural setting as we delve into the world of marble sculpture. Here, you'll find work tables, blocks of pristine white marble sourced from the island of Naxos, and a collection of locally forged tools. Our experienced instructor Maggie Ross will take you on a journey through the rich history of marble arts, introducing you to various types of tools and discussing the unique properties of marble and other stones. You'll learn the traditional hand carving technique for each tool as you practice on a block of marble for a designated period. Whether you choose to follow one of our Archaic Greek design templates or bring your own idea to life, Maggie will work with you every step of the way, from concept to execution. With no prior experience necessary, this three-hour workshop is perfect for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the art of marble sculpture in a peaceful and serene outdoor setting. Come and discover the beauty and intrigue of this ancient craft!

Exercise your creativity in marble

Four of us, all women, went to learn how to carve beautiful Naxos marble with Maggie Ross. We each came away with a marble carving worthy of display at home. Maggie taught us how to use various tools and gave us time to practice before she helped us draw a design to curve and gave us instructions on how to proceed. In my case she also helped me straighten out a few mistakes along the way so I ended up with a wonderful carving. It was hard work but we all enjoyed the experience and would recommend it to others.

We booked this and were very excited as this is the island of marble. We started with picking out the piece we wanted to carve. Then you get to practice and you realized very quick how this takes strength. After our practice you get to work on your piece. It was very satisfying seeing your final result. This was a great one in a life time experience!

This was the perfect way to spend our last evening in Naxos! My husband and I had a great time and learned so much from Maggie. She is so knowledgeable about her craft and is willing to give as much or as little help as you need. Such a fun experience and you end up with a one-of-a-kind souvenir!

It WAS AO MUCH FUN!!!! Maggie was as great teacher and I went in there AMA thought I cannot do this but I did!! Maggie is very nice and we work in a garden with lots of quiet. She gives step by step instructions.
