Overview

This is a private tour with a 7-seater van for a maximum 6 guests. Elafonisi island and its beach are located in the southwestern tip of Crete, about 2 hours drive from Chania. It is regarded one of the best beaches in the world. This island is connected with Crete with a narrow and shallow strip of sand, forming with its long peninsula, exotic beaches with white sand and turquoise water. A shallow lagoon is formed, and you can walk to Elafonisi island and explore its beaches. The road to get there goes through breathtaking Topolia Gorge, picturesque villages and the fascinating varied landscapes. The aim of this tour is not only to visit a beach, but the trip to get there is an experience itself. We will park 1/4 of mile (1/2km) away and have to hike on a dirt path to the beach. On the way back we will make a stop for lunch. Optional visit to a Winery, Olive Oil Factory for Tasting Tour or Monastery upon request.

Itinerary

Elafonissi Beach

The road ends 1km (0,6 miles) before the beach. You will have to walk on a dirt track for 15 minutes down and 20 up the road. It will be harder to visit Elafonisi beach for children, persons with health problems or walking difficulties. Elafonisi is located in the southwestern most tip of Crete. It is an oblong peninsula, which often breaks in two parts by water giving the impression of being a separate island. Exotic beaches with white sand and turquoise water, are formed on either sides of the peninsula. The sand is pinkish in many places, taking its color from millions of crushed shells. Near the breaking point of the peninsula, the sea creates a small lagoon which you can cross the lagoon in order to reach the island. The island is a mile long, ending in a rocky outcrop. Elafonisi is a Natura 2000 protected area home to more than 100 rare plants and a great shelter for rare loggerhead sea turtles.

Topolia Gorge

We will drive through Topolia Gorge, its a scenic drive and stop to enjoy the breathtaking scenery. Hawks and goats can be spoted above and by the side of the gorge. Will try local honey, olive oil and other delicacies. On the way back we will stop at a traditional artist who carves olive wood.

Chrisoskalitissa Monastery

The monastery of Chrisoskalitissa is located a few kilometers before Elafonissi. It reminds of a fortress, perched on a 35m high rock with nice views. The name of the monastery means Our Lady Gold-stepped in Greek. This is taken after one step out of 98, which, according to tradition, was gold. It is said that only the faithful can see it. The temple has two aisles dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the Holy Trinity. The exact date of the establishment of the monastery is unknown.

Great Beach Day with Sofia!!

We went to Elafonisi Beach with one of the company's main guides Sofia! Sofia had everything planned from us, made sure we stopped when we needed to and took some pictures inside a gorge and then took us to one of the best beaches we have seen (and we have travelled a lot) Elafonisi! Absolutely marvellous our kids completely loved it! In the end we stopped at a village restaurant where we had a fantastic lunch!! Thanks to Sofia, she made our day trip as our best day in the island we had!!

great day at elafonisi beach

Had a very nice day travelling to Elafonisi beach with our guide. She did a job making sure we were comfortable and traveled safely back and forth. We had 3 sets of chairs and umbrellas waiting for us in a prime location on the Beach given her set up. Elafonisi beach was one of the nicest I have seen, with shallow blue water. On the way back we stopped small restaurant and had the most amazing goat with olive oil.

We had a great time on this tour. Sofia was our guide and she was very responsive. Unfortunately for us, Elafonisi was SUPER windy when we went so we were only able to stay for a little while, and unfortunately the system they have there does not provide notice of weather/wind conditions. Sofia was able to pivot and took us to Agia Marina which was a very nice beach, and then took us to a nice restaurant as well (at our cost, of course). She then was nice enough to drive us to a supermarket as we needed to pick up groceries and then drive us home. All in all, it was a successful tour given the circumstances. Sofia was very nice, accommodating and spent the time after the tour to send us a ton of recommendations for restaurants and other things to do and see in our area.

Beach and Lunch in Heaven!

Hello, we were on a cruise in the Mediterranean Sea. We had a 12 hour stop in Crete. Our choice was the Elafonisi Beach. I have been to beaches around the world, clearly this is my new #1 i will compare to all others. Absolutely perfect for families, couples and friends. While most of the pink beach is now gone you can see it especially at the sand bar area in the middle of the water. It is a 90+ min ride from Cruise Port. Fortunately our awesome tour guide Sophia was able to call ahead and get us sun beds with two umbrellas. The place fills up by 9 AM. That said you can buy umbrellas there as you walk down or bring them along cheaper in the town before. The water is the clearest I have ever seen for salt water, no algae. The beach is huge and you can walk out a great distance before reaching 5 feet, ideal for those who like to paddle out and talk and families with little kids. There is lots of beach to hike not feel crowded. We stayed 4 hours which was probably plenty for us. The trip to and from the beach was amazing our guide was very informative about Crete being a local who grew up there left and has come back for family life. The tour finished with an awesome lunch at local family restaurant, very affordable for families or newly weds. Food was top 3 on our extensive trip to Mediterranean. The best Moussaka and Dolmades I have ever eaten.
