Early morning start from Playa del Carmen, which was fine, because we were still jetlagged. Manuel (Tequila) picked us up. Shortly before we got to Chicén Itzá, he gave us an introduction, but also mention the Mayan culture, their current situation and even taught us some Mayan words.
It’s a good thing we got to Chichén Itzá early (before the crowds) because we could still do the amazing sound experiments. Manuel wasn’t too shy to confirm that the Maya’s also killed people by cutting their hearts out, but emphasized that it was only as a punisment, not an offering. He actually liked “Apokalyptico” by Mel Gibson which was interesting, because the film had ben critized for depicting the Mayans as cruel people.
Afterwards we went to the Chichikan cenote, which was a bit of a tourist trap. No further comment.
The highlight was still to come: the temple complex at Ek Balam. Much quieter that Chichén Itzá. We could climb the temple, enjoy the views over the jungle, but also realise how steep the steps are…
We got back to Playa del Carmen around 7pm after a wonderful day. I had long conversations with Manuel, about the situation of the Mayan people. He has a PhD in microbiology but makes more money as a tourist guide… Wonderful, intelligent person.
