Get ready to spend the day doing a LOT of walking. There is a lot to see and a lot of walking for one day. My wife and I are in our 50's and this was a lot for us. If you're not in shape, this tour isn't for you. (At the end of the day, my wife and I logged almost 9 miles walked, including our travel to the meeting location). Also, if you can do so, this trip is probably best in the off season. There were so many people when we went, it was a little overwhelming at times, and we went at the beginning of October. I can only imagine what it is like during the summer months.
We had a different guide for the two different tours. Both were very knowledgeable and were very thorough in describing the history and details of everything they were showing us. Our morning guide was great! I can't remember her name, but she did her best to learn all of our names and about our small group of about 18. We started at 8:15 in the morning and went pretty much non-stop at the Colosseum and grounds until about 12:30pm. My wife and I were the only one's continuing with the Vatican tour and she pointed us to some nice restaurants for lunch near the tour office, near the Colosseum.
After lunch we stopped at the tour office where a driver was waiting to take us to the meetup point for the Vatican, about a 30-minute drive away. That was an experience in itself. I would never be able to handle driving in Rome, very chaotic. Our driver easily maneuvered the traffic to our destination in no time.
Our Vatican tour was very thorough too. There was quite a bit I wish we could have seen, but with how packed and busy it was, our guide ensured to show us the main points and knew how to weave us through the crowds without much resistance and show us what she could. That tour ended at 5:30pm
The only bad thing I have to say about this excursion is that when I initially booked it, it was scheduled for a 9:30am start time. The tour operator reached out to us a couple of months beforehand that it had been moved to 8:00am. I understand now with how long the tour is why it was changed. The part that sucked for us was that we were staying in Ladispoli, which was about an hour and a half train and metro ride to the meetup location, so we had to get up very early. (5:00am) That combined with railway issues, we barely made it there in time. If you book this tour, ensure that you are staying close by, not far away and trying to use their public transportation during morning rush hour.
