Overview

This experience transcends a transportation tour. You will explore a world-class cavern, gaining insights into the formation of stalactites and stalagmites. Learn about the history of the Sea of Tethys unearthing fossils dating back over 60 million years. To get to the cave you will use the recently restored cable-car (updated September 2024), enjoying magnificent views of limestone rock and the beautiful valley covered in diverse plants including Mesquite and Anacahuita, typical trees of Northeastern Mexico. Following the cave visit, indulge in delightful bread and ice cream in the picturesque town of Garcia, a traditional Northeastern Mexican gem.

Good cave, great guide

I have visited many caves in the world, including the US Carlsbad Cavern and the Mammoth Cave. This cave is not as big as those with a trail only 2 km long, but the formation is spectacular. The guide Alex Elizondo was great. The only drawback is that we waited for an hour for the cable car because the cave operator or the cable car has to wait to have enough people to ascend, but it is not the fault of the tour operator. Overall, it is a great excursion.

The most memorable part of this trip was our amazing Guide Polo who was super knowledgeable and answered any of our questions about the beautiful Grutas.

Amazing Caves (cable car is working)

Highly recommend this. The cable car is working now so we didnt have to hike at all. The caves inside are beautiful. Our guide, Polo, was simply amazing. He was extremely friendly and helpful. The caves are extremely unique and I would recommend everyone to atleast try this out while visiting Monterey.

Last minute alternative tour - still great!

Though we had booked the Grutas de Garcia experience, unfortunately the caves were closed due to weather and renovations, but we were given an alternative private tour with Alex, and we had a wonderful half day tour with him. We visited the lovely horsetail waterfall and nearby observation deck, and then made our way to the "magical town" Santiago for a bit of a wander and lunch at La Postreria 77 (lunch not included, but affordable and delicious!). Alex was a wonderful guide; knowledgeable, patient, friendly, and interesting! And the sights were lovely - now we'll just have to come back to do the caves!
