Overview

Our day-long tour starts on the water, as we ride our own trajinera– a festively-decorated flat-bottom boat used by locals to traverse the canals – through part of the ecological reserve that is particularly rich in flora and fauna. As the boat glides through the canals that connect the chinampas, we’ll have an onboard family-style meal made using local ingredients and learn about the thousand-years-old local agricultural method that’s still used to feed nearby Mexico City today. Along the way, we’ll stop at a working chinampa to meet a local farmer and find out more about the distinctive local way of life and work.

Itinerary

  • Hagamos Composta Café Comunitario

    Will start the day in central Mexico City with coffee and pastries at Hagamos Composta - Café Comunitario. We will then depart in a private van to the NESCO heritage site of Xochimilco, a place for a pleasure cruise and also a vital agricultural resource. We’ll learn more about Xochimilco's culture and food and meet the people who maintain its one-of-a-kind agricultural system. The Chinampas

  • Xochimilco

    our first stop will be the vast market of the area of Xochimilco. We’ll try different pre-Columbian dishes such as tlacoyos (oval-shaped corn-meal patties filled with fava beans, cheese, refried beans, spinach, potatoes and more) handmade by local women who set up shop every morning at one of the aisles; banana leaf-wrapped tamales – the best of the city – made by Don Lupe and his wife, an older couple native to the area; and chileatole, an ancient drink made with corn, herbs and peppers. As we explore the market we’ll learn more about the different kinds of produce that are grown locally in the chinampas.

  • Floating Gardens of Xochimilco

Food, canals and culture

Jacinto was a great host, navigating us around the markets and canals. This was our first day in Mexico City and it was great to escape the hustle and bustle and see a very unique part of the city. It was a small group, and we had such a lovely day eating lots of wonderful food that we might not have been brave enough to order and try on our own.

Jacinto was a wonderful guide, and we tried so many amazing foods on our tour that I probably wouldn’t have discovered otherwise. We enjoyed the peaceful boat ride along the canals looking at the eco farms. Would do it again in a heartbeat!

My husband and I took this tour by recommendation of friends. The best part of the tour was being able to eat so much tasty, local food from the market without fear of The Revenge. Guide Nacho made special tweaks on the spot to ensure vegetarian attendee got a good quesadilla, among other accommodations for the group that made the tour feel special and curated. I also really appreciated the close relationships Nacho had with each vendor, you can tell Backstreets really nurtures those relationships. I highly recommend this tour as a way to explore Xochimilco, eat soooo much good food, and feel taken care of as a customer.

This was one of the most memorable city tours we have ever taken, and we've taken a lot! We learned so much in depth history of the city and nearby region. The food! We tried some things we hadn't had before and some very delicious traditional foods. The mole!! The boat excursion was an added treat and we loved having our meal aboard the boat, in the quiet and serene waters. Our guide couldn't have been more enlightening and told lots of interesting stories of the city she loves.

The tour was fantastic. A great alternative to the party boats. It was really fun and we learned so much about Mexican history. We ate fantastic local food and Nacho, our tour guide, was fantastic! He taught us so much about local culture and food! It was so worth it!!!
