Are you ready for an adventure like no other? Join us at Glacier Encounter for a breathtaking private glacier hike on the southern coast of Iceland. Our expert guides will lead you on a three hour walking tour of Sólheimajökull glacier outlet. On this tour you will see incredible glacier formations such as crevasses and moulins. These formations can be awe-inspiring and formidable, but our expert guides will ensure your safety and enjoyment. We have great respect for our environment and the history of Iceland. Did you know that the glacier ice that runs down from the peak of the volcano Katla is hundreds of years old and the area around the glacier was first settled in the ninth century? Our guides love sharing their knowledge and stories, so we invite you join us to make the most of your Iceland trip.

How to find us an the Sólheimajökull glacier parking lot: - We are not in the main building. - Look for the guide in orange jacket with the logo. - We will have two benches with sheepskin fur on them placed at the back of our vehicle.

Itinerary

Conquer the glacier on our three hour long hike through Sólheimajökull Glacier. This is a private tour so your group/family will have your own certified glacier guide for the whole trip. Our expert guides will help you gear up and brief you on safety elements. Once your group is ready we will head into the glacial valley for about 20 minutes until we find the edge of the glacier. Since this is a private tour the pace of the hike through the glacier is matched to everybody's abilities and fitness. The alien like surface of Sólheimajökull can be challenging but with our guides, this adventure will be fun and hopefully something you will never forget. We provide all the safety gear necessary: crampons, harnesses, helmets and hiking poles. We encourage our guests to bring worn-in hiking boots, gloves, insulating and waterproof layers. The weather is usually not working in our favour in Iceland, wind and precipitation can be expected most days.

Phenomenal Private Glacier Hike with Family

Our family of five (2 adults, 3 kids ages 12, 10 & 9) had a phenomenal private glacier hike with our tour guide Lucas. He was friendly, informative, & very engaging with our kids. Once he could tell our kids were comfortable on the ice helped them explore some more adventurous areas of the ice. Of course he was diligent to double check the safety of each place before we went near them. But once he determined they were safe we got to explore a small ice tunnel and inside of a large crevice. He was also extremely knowledgeable about the glaciers themselves which was interesting for my husband & I. We definitely recommend this tour to any family!

This was the highlight of our visit to Iceland. Our guide, Jokull, was very personable, fun, and knowledgeable. He shared information about the glacier as we went along, and even challenged us to step out of our comfort zone (we tried repelling). The private tour was the way to go after seeing some large group tours on the glacier. Thanks Glacier Encounter for a great time!

Awesome tour - great guide!

This was an incredible tour! Heather was an awesome guide - she was very knowledgeable and really personable. We felt very safe the whole trip, and she would scout each area to make sure it was navigable before leading us through. We got to see multiple different features within the glacier, including going down into part of it and tasting the water. Heather was able to customize the hike based on our abilities as well, which allowed us to have a much more unique experience than the larger tour groups. Really recommend this tour company specifically. They are a small Icelandic business, run by people who really care!

Amazing Ice Experience

The Glacier Hike was an unforgettable experience. Our guide, Heather, was knowledgeable and made the entire trek so fun. We got to go inside the ice and are so thankful we got to experience this wonderful adventure with our 7 and 11 year old kids! Highly, highly recommend!

This was amazing, a highlight of our visit to Iceland. Walking the glacier was an experience I’ll never forget.
