Itinerary

  • Oak Alley Plantation

Experience a bygone era in one of the South's most beautiful settings - Oak Alley Plantation, built in 1839. Marvel at the unbelievable quarter-mile long alley of 28 magnificent Oak trees, each over 250 years old. Perhaps the most photographed plantation ever, Oak Alley has been the setting for such motion pictures as "Interview with a Vampire", "Primary Colors" and the wedding of Bo and Hope from the daytime soap opera, "Days of our Lives". Your guided Oak Valley Plantation tour will reveal the stories of the home and its history. View the Majestic Cypress Trees in Louisiana's swamps bordering the Mississippi River. You can purchase a snack, salad or sandwich in the Cafe and Ice Cream Parlor to enjoy at the picnic tables or aboard the coach (not included in price).

    2 hours

  • Lake Pontchartrain (Pass By)

Although called a lake, this is actually a large lagoon and brackish estuary fed by fresh water rivers and connected to the Gulf of Mexico. Covering 630 square miles (1600 km2) it is one of the largest wetlands in North America.

  • N/A (Pass By)

View the spillway, a flood control operation in the Lower Mississippi west of New Orleans. The spillway, when open, allows floodwaters from the Mississippi River to flow into Lake Pontchartrain and thence into the Gulf of Mexico.

  • St. Joseph Plantation (Pass By)

Historic plantation, circa 1830, that remains a family owned working sugar plantation today along with sister property Felicity Plantation, circa 1846.

  • Laura Plantation: Louisiana's Creole Heritage Site (Pass By)

Historic Creole sugar cane plantation, circa 1805, and plantation complex with 12 buildings on the National Register.

An Enjoyable Day Trip to Oak Alley Plantation

Published on Jan, 2025

Robert, our driver, made the Oak Alley Plantation tour extra enjoyable! He had all sorts of comments, trivia and other Plantation photo opportunities along the way. He also showed two informational videos on our ride. Everyone I encountered at the Oak Alley Plantation was so pleasant, as well. All employees seem happy to be sharing part of history and educating us on the past. The little store right beyond the slave quarters has snacks and souvenirs.

Experienced a balanced and thought-provoking tour of Oak Alley Plantation over the holiday weekend. The tour of the main house included information on the the daily lives of the plantation owners and the enslaved people, and the self-guided tour of the slave quarters was illuminating and heart-wrenching. Our bus driver, Robert, also provided quite a bit of context for neighboring plantations and the area on the ride to and from. He had a number of anecdotes and provided great edutainment during the trip!

Not to be missed

The property was lovely, the guide was knowledgeable and friendly and the shop was well stocked. I had such a lovely time here. I highly recommend this as a place to visit while in New Orleans.

The oak trees

Alton Brown was excellent. Answered all the questions, explained all during the trip and gave all his attention. Keep him. The plantation site gave us a good idea of of it was to have a farm with slaves, their life conditions and the up and downs of their owners. It was worth going

A nice trip out to see the plantations outside of New Orleans. Our driver/guide was named Richard was very knowledgeable and taught us a lot about the area. The plantation it self was smaller than I expected, but there was plenty of time to walk around, see all the attractions, take the tour and have a bite to eat.
