This was a very well-paced roughly eight hour introduction to Tangier and its surrounding area. Our driver arrived early near Marbella to take us to the ferry, a tour in itself in summer months when the sun is up. We were treated to our first glimpse of the African shoreline as we descended to the ferry’s port.
After about an hour’s journey afloat, we were met in Tangier by our guide, Abdul Salam, who proved to be equally informative and entertaining. We got into our van and were shown neighborhoods in the city emblematic of its past as we moved west toward the Atlantic. We visited caves and a park with spectacular views of the ocean. We also had a light brunch at a local restaurant that was fantastic. The camel ride along the shore was great, too.
We then moved back to the city to tour its older sections, the Casbah and Medina. These were interesting offering great cultural and architectural examples of this part of Africa. We then had a great traditional Moroccan meal in a restaurant in the Medina that was tasty, generous, and thoroughly enjoyable.
Out final stop before the return was the market, which I enjoyed even as a non-shopper. The return to our lodging by ferry and car went smoothly.
Abdul was a great guide with excellent English skills and knowledge of the region.
My only tip, pun intended, is that I wish i had carried smaller bills on my journey. We met many Moroccans who contributed to our enjoyment on this journey, and I would have better prepared for that had I known in advance. That was on me, but I thought I’d share my own lesson for your benefit.
