Overview

A truly unique experience which is only offered here. Explore one of the best beaches of Ketchikan at low tide. This special excursion is ONLY offered once a day to take advantage of the lowest tide. One of Ketchikan's best locations for spotting bald eagles, seals, and whales from land, this beach is known for its rock and tide pools. At low tide, you can walk the beach and find dozens of different types of crabs, starfish, urchins, and sea anemones. You might even see an octopus. After exploring, warm up at the beach bonfire and roast some s'mores. On the drive to, or back from, the excursion, stop by Totem Bright State Park for a self-guide visit to learn about local Alaskan Native culture. And of course, see some totem poles. This excursion is family-friendly and suitable for all ages.

Meeting points

Ketchikan Rain Gauge Directions: A representative will be at the Ketchikan Rain Gauge, located outside of the Ketchikan Visitors Bureau, on Berth 2 of the cruise ship dock, holding a sign that says "Puddle Jumpers." If your cruise ship docks at Ward Cove, we will arrange for your pickup enroute.

    After being picked up, you will be driven to a local beach at low tide, where you can explore the sandy beach and see starfish, sea urchins, crabs, whales, seals, eagles, and more.

  • Totem Bight State Historical Park

    An 11-acre park that is packed with restored and re-carved totems as well as a colorful Clan House. Providing a stunning backdrop to the totems is the park's lush rainforest setting and the rocky coastline along Tongass Narrows.

We had an amazing time getting to see creatures and plants that we've never seen up close before-- Helen was an encyclopedia of friendly information, and Marta and Email were warm and knowledgeable. An absolutely unique experience, and one we talk about for a long time!

The beach teems with marine life when the tide recedes, revealing creatures of all sizes. This excursion was one of the finest my wife and I have experienced, hosted by locals who care for their environment and take genuine pleasure in sharing their knowledge. We will definitely book this excursion again on our return to Ketchikan.

Great Alaskan Experience

This was an amazing experience and the staff couldn’t be friendlier. We opted not to schedule an excursion through our cruise and instead signed up for something that allowed us to walk around the ride pools. We saw and touched a number of sea creatures while hearing bald eagles. Some our party saw a bald eagle swoop down and try to grab a fish. The scenery is picturesque. Totem Bight is a really great experience with wonderful history. At the end our driver dropped us off in downtown Ketchikan.
