Intrepid Museum

See the Intrepid Air Craft Carrier, the Space Shuttle Pavilion, the Growler Submarine, plus watch an 8-minute film entitled 'the Story of Intrepid' and a 15-minute film called 'Kamikaze: Day of Darkness, Day of Light.' Launched in 1943, the former aircraft carrier USS Intrepid fought in World War II, surviving five kamikaze attacks and one torpedo strike. The ship later served in the Cold War and the Vietnam War. Intrepid also served as a NASA recovery vessel in the 1960s. It was decommissioned in 1974, and today is berthed on the Hudson River as the centerpiece of the museum.

Fab trip around a piece of fascinating modern history

Loved the trip around USS Intrepid which exceeded our expectations. The ship and its incredible story just keep us enthralled, so much achieved and thank goodness the patrons fought to keep her from being scrapped. The story covers her WW11 involvement taking Kamikaze hits to Vietnam and Space capsule recovery. Well worth the trip and taking advantage of the NYC pass that includes entry

Great self paced museum with something for everything. I enjoyed touring the flight deck, hanger deck, and the bridges. You have access to a lot more spaces than I thought. The shuttle was great. We didn’t do the Concorde tour because we ran out of steam after the Submarine tour. I never realized how big the space shuttles are.

A great day out for little boys of all ages.

Visiting the intrepid turned this old man into a little excited boy. I love military stuff. You should arrive early, you will need at least 5 hours to absorb all the amazing facts about the Essex class aircraft carrier. Plus, there is Concorde, a space shuttle and a submarine to take in. You will be very tired afterwards, but full of military facts.
